This sand seal assembly is compatible with Volkswagen Type 1, 2, and 3 air-cooled engines (Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Bus, and Dune Buggy applications). Please note that this unit is specifically designed to fit Scat brand sand seal pulleys only. It is not a universal fit for other aftermarket or stock pulleys.

Verify Case Machining: Sand seals are not a "drop-in" replacement for stock configurations. Your engine case must be professionally machined to accept the sand seal housing. If you are replacing an existing seal, ensure the bore in the case is clean and free of burrs or old sealant before tapping the new housing into place.

Lubricate the Seal Lip: To prevent damage during the initial startup, always apply a light film of clean engine oil or assembly grease to the inner lip of the rubber seal and the pulley surface. Installing these components "dry" can cause the rubber to friction-burn or tear the moment the engine fires up.

Check for Pulley Concentricity: When installing your Scat pulley into the new seal, ensure the pulley is perfectly centered. If the crankshaft or pulley has excessive run-out (wobble), it will quickly wallow out the rubber seal, leading to oil leaks and allowing debris to bypass the seal. Periodically inspect the seal for signs of hardening or cracking, especially if the vehicle is used frequently in desert or beach environments.
