OVERVIEW
The 1968 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus stands as a legendary icon in the air-cooled world, but as any seasoned mechanic knows, it is notorious for being a "transition year" filled with one-year-only components. Your throttle cable is the direct link between your right foot and the engine''s soul, and when that cable starts to fray or stretch, your driving experience suffers immediately. This high-quality replacement throttle cable is engineered specifically to meet the exacting 3670mm length required for the 1968 Bay Window Bus. Precision-manufactured to eliminate binding and provide a crisp, responsive pedal feel, this cable ensures that your engine receives the exact input you intend, whether you''re cruising down the coast or navigating city traffic.
Installing a generic or "universal" cable is a recipe for headache, especially on the unique 1968 chassis where routing and length are critical for proper carburetor synchronization. This IAP (International Auto Parts) unit is designed to replicate the original factory feel, featuring a durable multi-strand steel core that resists stretching over time. We understand that reliability is paramount when you''re behind the wheel of a classic transporter, which is why we stock this specific 211-721-555D part number. Don''t settle for "close enough" when it comes to your acceleration; ensure your Bus remains as dependable as the day it left the factory by choosing a part that was built for its specific production window.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Lubrication is Non-Negotiable
Before you slide your new 3670mm cable into the chassis guide tube, it is vital to lubricate the entire length of the cable. We recommend using a high-quality white lithium grease or a specialized cable lubricant. Do not use heavy chassis grease, as it can attract dirt and become gummy over time, leading to a "sticky" throttle. A well-lubricated cable not only provides a smoother pedal feel but also significantly reduces internal friction against the guide tube, preventing premature snapping and fraying.
2. Inspect the Guide Tube and Seal
While the cable is removed, take a moment to inspect the metal guide tube that runs through the chassis. If your old cable snapped, it may have left burrs or debris inside the tube. Use a can of compressed air or a flexible brush to clear the passage. Additionally, ensure the rubber boot where the cable exits the fan shroud is in good condition. A cracked or missing boot allows engine heat and road grime to enter the guide tube, which can cause the cable to bind or rust from the inside out.
3. Achieve Perfect Tension Without Over-Tightening
When connecting the cable to the carburetor linkage, ensure there is a tiny amount of "play" (about 1-2mm) when the pedal is at rest. If the cable is too tight, it can prevent the carburetor from returning to its idle stop, causing a high idle. Conversely, if it is too loose, you won''t achieve Wide Open Throttle (WOT) when the pedal is floored. If you are using this cable for an off-road application or a non-stock engine setup, you may need a cable shortening kit to fine-tune the length for your specific linkage geometry.
