Turning Brake Rebuild Kit 3/4
* Designed for 3/4 inch bore size.
* Single handle type.
* Manufactured by EMPI.
OVERVIEW
When you''re carving through deep sand dunes or navigating tight, technical trails in your woods buggy, your turning brake is the most critical tool in your arsenal for precision handling. Over time, the harsh off-road environment, combined with heat cycles and hydraulic fluid breakdown, can cause the internal seals of your master cylinder to swell, shrink, or tear. This results in a "mushy" handle feel, fluid bypass, or a complete loss of braking pressure when you need it most. The EMPI Turning Brake Rebuild Kit for 3/4-inch bore assemblies is the professional-grade solution to restore your cutting brake to factory-fresh performance. Instead of replacing the entire expensive upright assembly, this kit allows you to refresh the internal hydraulics, ensuring that every pull of the lever provides the immediate, tire-locking response required for aggressive off-road maneuvering.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that off-roaders demand reliability above all else. This EMPI RaceTrim compatible rebuild kit is engineered with high-durometer rubber seals and precision-machined components designed to withstand the rigors of high-pressure hydraulic systems. Whether you are running a single-handle or dual-handle upright turning brake, the 3/4-inch bore size is a standard for many sand rails, Baja Bugs, and Manx-style buggies. By installing this kit, you are not only saving money but also ensuring that your vehicle''s secondary braking system is capable of holding up under the stresses of competitive racing or weekend recreation. Don''t let a leaking seal ruin your trip to the dunes; keep your turning brakes sharp and responsive with this essential maintenance kit.
FITMENT
This rebuild kit is designed specifically for EMPI and RaceTrim branded upright turning brake assemblies utilizing a 3/4-inch master cylinder bore. It is commonly used on the following vehicles and setups:

- Dune Buggies: Manx-style, fiberglass tub buggies, and tube-chassis rails.
- Baja Bugs: Custom off-road Beetle builds with independent rear braking setups.
- Specific Assemblies: Fits EMPI Part Numbers 16-2508-0, 16-2509-0, and 16-2510-0.
- Handle Configurations: Compatible with both Single-Handle and Dual-Handle upright styles.
- Bore Size: Strictly for 3/4" (0.750 inch) diameter master cylinder bores.

PRO TIPS
1. Inspect the Bore for Pitting and Scoring
Before installing your new seals, it is absolutely vital to inspect the internal walls of the master cylinder bore. Because off-road vehicles often sit for long periods, moisture can accumulate in the brake fluid, leading to corrosion or pitting inside the aluminum or steel housing. If you feel any ridges or see dark pits, the new seals will likely fail or leak within a short period. Use a dedicated brake cylinder hone or a very fine-grit Scotch-Brite pad with fresh brake fluid to "cross-hatch" the bore and ensure a smooth, clean surface for the new rubber to seat against. If the pitting is deep, it is safer to replace the entire master cylinder unit.
2. Lubricate with Brake Fluid Only
When assembling the new seals onto the piston, never use petroleum-based grease, WD-40, or standard motor oil. Petroleum products will cause the EPDM rubber seals to swell and disintegrate almost instantly, leading to total brake failure. Always use clean, fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid (whichever you are running in your system) to lubricate the seals and the bore during the reassembly process. This ensures the seals slide into place without tearing or flipping. For the best results, soak the new seals in a small cap of clean brake fluid for a few minutes before you begin the installation.
3. Master the Bleeding Process
Turning brakes are notorious for trapping air because of their upright orientation and the way they are plumbed into the existing rear brake lines. After installing the rebuild kit, we highly recommend "bench bleeding" the master cylinder if possible, or using a vacuum bleeder at the rear wheel cylinders. Ensure the turning brake handle is in the fully "down" or relaxed position to allow the compensating port to open, which lets fluid flow from the main master cylinder through the turning brake. If the handle is partially pulled, you will never be able to get the air out of the lines, resulting in a spongy pedal and poor turning performance.
