OVERVIEW
Transform your classic Volkswagen''s braking performance with the EMPI Front Disc Brake Kit, designed specifically for 1968 through 1977 Ball Joint Type 1 models. For decades, VW enthusiasts have struggled with the inherent limitations of four-wheel drum brakes, which are notorious for fading under heavy use and requiring constant manual adjustment to maintain even stopping power. This comprehensive conversion kit replaces your outdated front drum setup with high-performance rotors and modern calipers, providing the reliable, fade-free deceleration necessary for today''s modern traffic conditions. By upgrading to disc brakes, you are not just improving your Beetle''s performance; you are making a critical investment in safety, ensuring that your vintage ride stops straight and true every single time you depress the pedal.
This kit is engineered by EMPI for a seamless installation, featuring the traditional 4 on 130mm bolt pattern that allows you to retain your factory-style wheels or aftermarket rollers while gaining modern stopping technology. The inclusion of dedicated disc brake spindles is a massive advantage, as it eliminates the need for flimsy bracket adapters and ensures perfect caliper alignment for maximum pad-to-rotor contact. Whether you are building a reliable daily driver, a weekend cruiser, or a show-stopping restoration, this kit delivers a significant boost in driver confidence. Please note that while this kit provides the heavy hardware for the conversion, you must pair it with a fresh set of bearings and seals (part number 22-2851-0) to complete the job properly, ensuring your front end is as smooth and quiet as it is safe.

PRO TIPS
1. Don''t Forget the Bearings and Seal Kit
One of the most common mistakes when ordering the 22-2850-0 kit is forgetting the bearing and seal kit (Part # 22-2851-0). Because you are moving to a new spindle and rotor setup, your old drum brake bearings are often not compatible or are simply too worn to reuse. Always pack your new bearings with a high-quality, high-temperature disc brake grease. Avoid "general purpose" grease, as disc brakes generate significantly more heat than drums, and inferior grease can liquefy and leak onto your new braking surfaces, causing immediate failure.
2. Inspect and Upgrade Your Brake Lines
When you have the front end disassembled for a disc brake conversion, it is the absolute best time to inspect your flexible rubber brake hoses. If they show any signs of cracking or swelling, replace them immediately. Many builders choose to upgrade to stainless steel braided lines at this stage to eliminate "pedal mush" and ensure that the increased pressure from the disc system is delivered efficiently to the calipers. Also, ensure you have a bottle of fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid on hand, as you will need to perform a full system bleed to remove air pockets.
3. Verify Master Cylinder Compatibility
While this kit is a "bolt-on" for your spindles, you should verify the condition and type of your master cylinder. If your Beetle is still running an older, single-circuit master cylinder, we highly recommend upgrading to a dual-circuit reservoir system for added safety. Additionally, when switching from drums to discs, you may notice a change in pedal travel. Ensure your master cylinder is in top shape to handle the displacement required by the new dual-piston calipers. If the pedal feels too soft after bleeding, check that the calipers are installed with the bleeder valves facing UP; installing them upside down will trap air and prevent a firm pedal.
