Overview
The 1967 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus occupies a legendary status among air-cooled enthusiasts, serving as the final year of the iconic Split Window design while introducing modern safety features like 12-volt electronics and, most importantly, a dual-circuit braking system. This EMPI Dual Circuit Brake Reservoir is a precision-engineered replacement for that specific, one-year-only application. Over decades of service, original plastic reservoirs become brittle, yellowed, and prone to hairline fractures that can lead to catastrophic fluid loss. Replacing your aging unit with this high-quality, translucent reservoir ensures you can monitor your fluid levels at a glance while maintaining the hydraulic integrity required for safe operation. Whether you are performing a concours-level restoration on a 1967 Microbus or simply keeping your daily driver transporter on the road, this reservoir provides the factory-correct look and fitment you demand.
Beyond its direct application for the 1967 model year, this reservoir is a staple in the custom VW community for dual-circuit brake conversions on 1955-1966 Split Window Buses. Upgrading an early Bus from a single-circuit master cylinder to a dual-circuit system is one of the single most important safety modifications a builder can perform, as it prevents a total loss of braking power in the event of a single line failure. With its 100mm mounting spacing, this reservoir is designed to sit perfectly atop or in line with dual-circuit master cylinders, providing a clean and professional installation. Manufactured from high-density, chemical-resistant plastic, it is built to withstand the harsh environment of the VW front beam area, resisting the corrosive effects of brake fluid and the vibrations of the road for years to come.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
Tip 1: Never Reuse Old Grommets or Hoses
When installing a new reservoir, it is absolutely critical to replace the rubber grommets in the master cylinder and the supply lines. We strongly recommend using genuine German blue brake fluid hose for any remote mounting. Standard vacuum or fuel lines will sweat and degrade when exposed to brake fluid, leading to leaks and potential brake failure. Lubricate the new grommets with a tiny bit of clean brake fluid to allow the reservoir nipples to slide in without tearing the rubber. If the fit is tight, don''t force it with a hammer; slow, steady pressure is the key to a leak-free seal.
Tip 2: Bench Bleed Before Final Connection
If you are installing this reservoir as part of a full dual-circuit conversion, always bench bleed your master cylinder before connecting the reservoir lines. Once the master cylinder is primed, mount the reservoir and fill it slowly to avoid trapping large air bubbles in the feed lines. Because the 1967 Bus reservoir sits relatively low compared to the rest of the system, getting the air out of the supply side is vital. After filling, let the system gravity bleed for a few minutes before you begin the standard pumping sequence at the wheel cylinders.
Tip 3: Monitor for UV Degradation
While this reservoir is made from high-quality plastic, all plastic components in an air-cooled VW are subject to environmental stress. On a Type 2 Bus, the reservoir is somewhat protected, but it is still exposed to heat and moisture. During your annual safety inspection, wipe the reservoir down and check for any "crazing" or tiny spiderweb cracks in the plastic. If the plastic becomes opaque or dark yellow, it is losing its structural integrity. Replacing the reservoir every 10 years as a preventative measure is a cheap insurance policy against a pedal-to-the-floor scenario on the highway.
