Tip 1: The Inspection Plate Secret

To access the shift rod coupler on a Beetle or Ghia, you don''t need to drop the transmission. There is an access plate located on the center tunnel just under the rear seat. Remove the single screw holding the plate, and you''ll have direct access to the coupler. Before you disconnect the old one, make sure the transmission is in neutral. This makes it much easier to align the new coupler pin with the selector shaft without fighting against the internal gear detents of the transaxle.

Tip 2: Security is Key with the Cone Screw

The small square-head cone screw that holds the coupler to the shift rod is notorious for vibrating loose over time. When installing this EMPI coupler, we highly recommend using a dab of blue (medium-strength) thread locker on that screw. Furthermore, most late-style couplers have a hole drilled through the square head of the bolt. Use safety wire to tether that bolt to the coupler cage. Tip 3: Check Your Shift Rod Bushing Simultaneously
