OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of your air-cooled powerhouse, the factory-standard axles become the weakest link in your drivetrain. The EMPI Chromoly Axle for Swing Axle applications is engineered specifically to handle the increased torque and aggressive launches that modern performance engines demand. Whether you are building a high-horsepower street sleeper or a rugged off-road rail, switching to 4340 chromoly is a non-negotiable upgrade. Stock axles are prone to twisting and catastrophic snapping under stress, but these heavy-duty replacements offer the torsional fatigue resistance needed to keep your wheels turning. At Appletree Auto, we know that reliability is the difference between a trophy and a tow truck, and these axles are the gold standard for swing axle strength.
Precision-machined to exacting tolerances, this 28-7/16 inch axle is designed for the "long-axle" swing axle configurations typically found in late 1960s models and performance wide-track kits. The induction-hardened surfaces and superior grain structure of the chromoly steel ensure that the splines won''t strip out even when you are dumping the clutch at the drag strip or bouncing through a wash in the desert. This isn''t just a replacement part; it is an insurance policy for your transaxle. By upgrading to EMPI''s proven chromoly technology, you are investing in a component that bridges the gap between vintage engineering and modern racing demands. Don''t let a snapped factory axle ruin your weekend when you can bolt in the strength of chromoly.

PRO TIPS
1. Master the Torque for Safety
One of the most common mistakes during installation is failing to properly torque the rear axle nut. For these chromoly axles, you must ensure the axle nut is torqued to a minimum of 217-250 ft-lbs, though many performance builders prefer to go as high as 300 ft-lbs with a torque multiplier or a heavy-duty cheater bar. A loose nut will allow the drum to chatter against the splines, eventually stripping both the axle and the drum. Always use a new cotter pin and never back the nut off to align the hole; only tighten it further until the pin can be inserted safely.
2. Inspect Your Internal Components
When you have the transaxle open to swap the axles, it is the perfect time to inspect your fulcrum plates (spade paddles) and side gears. If your old axle snapped or showed signs of heavy wear, there is a high probability that the fulcrum plates are scarred or worn thin. Installing a brand-new chromoly axle with worn fulcrum plates will cause excessive "slop" in the drivetrain and can lead to premature failure of the axle spade. Ensure everything is clean, smooth, and well-lubricated with high-quality gear oil during the reassembly process.
3. Optimize Your Boot Orientation
To prevent the dreaded swing axle leak, pay close attention to your axle boot installation. We highly recommend using high-quality silicone split-boots or solid boots if the transaxle is out of the car. If using split boots, always position the seam horizontally (at the 3 o''clock or 9 o''clock position) rather than vertically. This prevents gravity from pulling gear oil directly against the seam and the bolt holes. Additionally, do not over-tighten the small clamps on the axle tube; they should be snug enough to prevent leaks but loose enough to allow the axle to pivot without tearing the rubber.
