These EMPI axle retainers are designed for all Aircooled Volkswagen models equipped with a swing axle transmission. This includes the VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia, and early Type 2 Transporters. They are a critical upgrade for high-performance applications, Dune Buggies, and Woods Buggies where the stock stamped-steel retainers are prone to failure.

Stock axle tube retainers are made from thin stamped metal which often bows or bends under stress, leading to persistent transmission fluid leaks and potential axle breakage. These heavy-duty steel retainers are precision machined to provide a rigid, flat surface that reinforces the axle tube connection and ensures a superior seal for gaskets and O-rings.

Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Tip 1: Prepare the Mating Surface. Before installation, use a gasket scraper or brake cleaner to ensure the transmission case mating surface is perfectly clean and free of old sealant. Because these retainers are precision-machined to eliminate leaks, any leftover debris can prevent a flush fit and compromise the seal.

Tip 2: Inspect Axle Tube Flanges. Since these retainers are often installed to fix existing leaks caused by "bowed" stock parts, check your axle tube flanges for flatness before reassembly. If the tube flange itself was distorted by the old stamped retainer, you may need to lightly dress the surface to ensure it sits perfectly against the new heavy-duty steel plate.

Tip 3: Use a Cross-Pattern Torque Sequence. To prevent binding and ensure even pressure on the O-ring, tighten the mounting bolts in a diagonal cross pattern. This ensures the retainer applies uniform clamping force across the entire circumference of the axle tube, maximizing the reinforcement benefits in off-road or severe driving conditions.
