OVERVIEW
When it comes to the drivetrain of your vintage Volkswagen, the CV joints are the unsung heroes that translate raw power into motion, and the EMPI 100mm Type 2 CV Joint Kit is the gold standard for both stock restorations and high-performance upgrades. Designed specifically for the heavy-duty requirements of the 1968 to 1979 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus, these joints are precision-engineered to handle the increased weight and torque demands characteristic of the 002 and 091 transaxles. Whether you are navigating a steep mountain pass in a fully loaded Westfalia or pushing the limits of a custom sand rail, these CV joints provide the smooth operation and structural integrity necessary to keep you moving without the dreaded clicking or vibration associated with worn-out or inferior drivetrain components. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that reliability is paramount, which is why we offer this EMPI kit as a robust solution for enthusiasts who demand longevity from their air-cooled machines.
This comprehensive kit isn''t just for Bus owners; it has become a legendary "go-to" upgrade for Beetle, Ghia, and Thing owners who have transitioned to off-road or high-horsepower street configurations. By utilizing the 100mm Type 2 joint on a modified Type 1 transaxle or custom chromoly axles, you gain a significantly greater range of motion and increased strength over the smaller 90mm stock units. Each kit comes complete with a high-quality CV joint, a durable rubber boot designed to withstand extreme flexing and temperature fluctuations, and the specific high-pressure grease required to ensure a long service life. By choosing this EMPI kit, you are investing in a product that bridges the gap between affordable maintenance and rugged performance, ensuring your air-cooled VW stays on the roador the trailfor years to come. Please note that while this kit includes the essentials, mounting bolts are not included and should be inspected or replaced during installation.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Grease Packing is Critical
Don''t just squeeze the grease packet into the boot and hope for the best. To ensure maximum longevity, you must "palm-pack" the CV joint. Place a glob of the provided molybdenum grease in your palm and press the joint into it repeatedly until the grease is forced through the internal races and balls and exits through the top. This ensures that every moving surface is lubricated from the first rotation. Any remaining grease in the packet should be applied inside the boot to act as a reservoir, but the internal lubrication of the joint itself is the most important step.
2. Inspect and Torque Your M10 Bolts
Since this kit does not include bolts, it is the perfect time to inspect your existing hardware. Type 2 CV joints use M10 bolts, which require significantly more torque than the M8 bolts found on standard Beetles. Always use a high-quality 12-point (Triple Square) bit to avoid stripping the heads. We recommend torquing these to approximately 33-35 ft-lbs and checking them again after the first 100 miles of driving. For off-roaders, using safety wire or specialized locking washers is a smart move to prevent the bolts from backing out under extreme vibration.
3. Mind the Boot Venting
When installing the new boot, be careful not to create a vacuum or a pressurized "balloon" inside the boot. If the boot is stretched too tightly or compressed too much during installation, the air trapped inside will expand as the joint heats up, potentially causing the boot to pop off or tear. After the boot is clamped to the axle and the joint, you can gently slide a small, dull screwdriver under the lip of the boot to "burp" the air out, ensuring it sits at its natural resting shape. This simple step prevents premature boot failure and keeps your grease where it belongsinside the joint.
