OVERVIEW
When you are pushing your off-road machine to the absolute limit in the dunes or tearing through rocky desert trails, your drivetrain is under immense stress. The 930 CV joint is the gold standard for high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen applications, providing the necessary articulation and strength for long-travel suspension setups. However, even the toughest 108mm CV joint is only as good as the protection it receives. This EMPI Off-Road Style 930 CV Boot Kit is engineered specifically to withstand the abusive conditions that would shred a standard street boot in minutes. By utilizing a high-quality neoprene material, this boot offers superior flexibility and resistance to the constant heat cycles and physical debris encountered in extreme off-roading. Whether you are running a high-horsepower sand rail or a rugged Baja Bug, keeping your grease in and the contaminants out is the only way to ensure your expensive CV joints don''t suffer a catastrophic failure mid-ride.
What sets this kit apart from generic replacements is the inclusion of the heavy-duty steel mounting flange. Standard street boots often rely on a simple lip that can easily pull away from the drive flange when the suspension reaches full extension or compression. This off-road style kit utilizes a bolt-on flange design that sandwiches the neoprene boot securely against the CV joint, creating a nearly impenetrable seal that stays put regardless of the angle. Each kit is a comprehensive solution, arriving with a fresh packet of high-moly grease specifically formulated for the high-friction environment of a 930 joint, along with durable zip ties to secure the axle side. Don''t risk a weekend ending early because of a torn boot; upgrading to these off-road style kits is a mandatory insurance policy for any serious IRS-equipped Volkswagen enthusiast who demands reliability in the dirt.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper CV Joint Packing is Crucial
When installing this kit, do not simply squeeze the grease packet into the boot and hope for the best. To maximize the life of your 930 CV joints, you must "pack" the joint manually. Place a glob of the provided high-moly grease in your palm and press the CV joint into it, forcing grease into the cage, race, and between every ball bearing until it oozes out the other side. Only after the joint is fully saturated should you put the remaining grease inside the boot itself. This ensures that from the very first rotation, your bearings are fully lubricated under load.
2. Burp the Boot to Prevent "Balloons"
One common mistake during installation is sealing the boot while it is full of air. As the CV joint heats up during operation, the air inside the boot expands. If there is too much air trapped, the boot will swell like a balloon and can eventually pop or rub against the chassis or suspension components. Before you tighten the final zip tie on the axle, insert a small, blunt screwdriver or pick between the boot and the axle to "burp" out the excess air while the suspension is at a neutral ride height. This allows the boot to collapse and expand naturally without building internal pressure.
3. Clean the Flange Surfaces Thoroughly
Before bolting the new steel flange and boot to your drive flange, ensure that every mating surface is completely free of old grease, dirt, and oil. Any residue left on the mounting face can cause the bolts to loosen over time or allow grease to weep out from the seal. Use a high-quality brake cleaner and a lint-free rag to prep the surfaces. Additionally, always use a drop of medium-strength thread locker on your CV bolts to ensure that the vibrations of off-road driving don''t cause the assembly to back out, which is a leading cause of boot failure and axle damage.
