PRO TIPS
1. Proper CV Lubrication and "Burping"
When assembling your 930 CV joints, it is critical to use a high-quality, high-molybdenum (moly) grease specifically designed for high-angle CV joints. Don''t just fill the boot; ensure the grease is packed thoroughly into the cage and around the balls of the joint. After installation, "burp" the boots by inserting a small, blunt screwdriver between the boot and the axle to release trapped air. This prevents the boot from expanding like a balloon due to heat and pressure, which can lead to premature boot failure or tearing during extreme suspension cycles.
2. Install Limit Straps to Protect Your Drivetrain
While 930 CV joints are famous for their high-angle capabilities, they are not invincible. It is vital to install high-quality limit straps to prevent the suspension from "drooping" past the maximum operating angle of the CV joints. If the suspension hangs too low, the CV joints can bind, causing immediate and catastrophic failure of the cage or the transaxle flanges. Set your limit straps so that they stop the arm''s downward travel about 1 to 2 degrees before the CV joint reaches its maximum bind point.
3. Re-Torque After the First Run
Off-road vibrations and the extreme torque loads placed on 3x3 arms and 930 hardware can cause components to settle. It is a mandatory safety practice to re-torque all 24 CV bolts and the trailing arm pivot bolts after your first couple of hours on the trail. We highly recommend using a small amount of blue thread-locking compound on the CV bolts and marking them with a paint pen. This allows you to perform a quick visual inspection during pit stops to ensure no bolts have started to back out under the stress of the desert terrain.
