OVERVIEW
When it comes to the rear suspension of your air-cooled Volkswagen, precision and stability are the cornerstones of a predictable ride. The BUGPACK Knobby Spring Plate Grommets are engineered specifically to replace the inferior, soft rubber bushings that originally came from the factory. Over time, stock rubber components tend to dry rot, crack, and "mush" under the heavy loads of cornering or off-road articulation. These high-performance urethane grommets feature a unique knobby design that allows for localized compression while maintaining the overall structural integrity of the suspension pivot point. By upgrading to these BUGPACK grommets, you are ensuring that your spring plates stay centered within the torsion housing, preventing the metal-on-metal contact that leads to premature wear and annoying suspension clunks.
These specific grommets are designed with a 2-inch inside diameter, making them the industry standard for most aftermarket adjustable spring plate kits. If you are running a high-performance street Beetle, a rugged Baja Bug, or a dedicated Sand Rail, you know that suspension geometry is everything. Standard bushings often "bottom out" or deform permanently under stress, leading to rear-end wander and poor alignment. The BUGPACK knobby design provides a superior dampening effect while remaining rigid enough to handle the increased torque of modified engines. Sold as a pair, these are intended for the inner position of your adjustable spring plate setup, providing the necessary clearance and support to keep your torsion bars operating smoothly through their entire range of travel.

PRO TIPS
1. Use the Correct Lubricant to Prevent Squeaking
One of the most common complaints with urethane bushings is the potential for "squeaking" over bumps. To avoid this, you should never use petroleum-based grease, as it can actually degrade the material over time. Instead, apply a liberal amount of high-quality silicone-based or graphite-based grease to the inner and outer surfaces of the grommet during installation. This ensures a silent, smooth-acting suspension and prevents the bushing from binding against the torsion housing or the spring plate collar. Don''t be shy with the grease; a well-lubricated bushing is a happy bushing.
2. Verify Your Collar Size Before Installation
It is critical to remember that these are 2-inch ID grommets, which are specifically sized for the larger collars found on most adjustable spring plates. Stock VW spring plates use a smaller diameter bushing. Before you begin the teardown of your rear suspension, take a pair of calipers to your adjustable spring plate collars. If they measure 2 inches, these are the exact replacements you need. Attempting to force these onto a stock plate or using them on a collar that is too small will result in a loose fit, leading to poor handling and potential damage to your torsion housing.
3. Check the Condition of Your Torsion Housing Pockets
When you have the old bushings out, take a moment to inspect the inner "pockets" of the torsion housing and the spring plate cover. Over decades of use, these areas can accumulate rust, scale, and debris that will prevent the new BUGPACK grommets from seating perfectly flush. Use a wire brush or a flap wheel to clean out any corrosion until the metal is smooth. If the housing is pitted, the "knobs" on these grommets are excellent at filling those minor imperfections, but a clean surface is always better for long-term durability. Ensuring a clean seat will prevent the spring plate from walking or shifting under heavy acceleration.
