Product Overview
When it comes to restoring the structural integrity and handling precision of your classic Volkswagen, the front axle beam is the foundation of everything. This IAP Ball Joint Front Beam is a premium-quality, stock-dimension replacement designed specifically for those who want to maintain the original factory ride height and suspension geometry of their Type 1. Over decades of service, original German beams often fall victim to severe "internal" rust, collision damage, or wallowed-out bearing surfaces that can lead to dangerous "death wobble" and unpredictable steering. Replacing your tired, pitted, or bent beam with this brand-new unit ensures that your Beetle''s front end is perfectly square, providing the stability and safety you expect from a master-crafted air-cooled component. This is a "bare" beam, meaning it serves as the perfect canvas for a complete front-end rebuild using your existing or new torsion leaves and control arms.
Unlike many aftermarket beams that come pre-equipped with adjusters for lowering, this specific model is built for the purist or the daily driver who values the comfortable, engineered travel of a stock-height VW. It is manufactured to exacting tolerances to ensure that your torsion arm bushings and bearings align perfectly, preventing the premature wear often seen in cheaper, distorted alternatives. Please note that while some generic photography might show adjustment hardware, this 113-401-021D unit is a fixed-height, non-adjustable beam. It is the ideal choice for a high-quality restoration where maintaining the iconic profile and smooth ride of a stock 1966-1977 Beetle or Karmann Ghia is the primary goal. By starting with a fresh, straight beam, you eliminate the guesswork associated with used parts and provide a solid mounting point for your steering box, dampener, and shock towers.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
Tip 1: Thoroughly Clean and Prep the Internal Tubes
Before you slide your torsion leaf stacks into this new beam, take the time to clean the internal surfaces of any manufacturing debris or shipping oil. We highly recommend applying a generous coating of high-pressure lithium grease or specialized moly-grease to the leaf stacks themselves. This prevents internal friction and "creaking" during suspension travel. Since this is a bare beam, ensure your old torsion leaves are inspected for cracks or "set" (sagging) before reinstallation; if your leaves are worn out, even a brand-new beam won''t fix a sagging front end.
Tip 2: Don''t Trust the Shipping Paint
The black coating found on these beams is generally a "shipping primer" designed to prevent flash rust during transit and storage. For a long-lasting restoration, you should scuff the surface and apply a high-quality chassis paint or have the beam powder-coated before installation. This is especially important in the "rust belt" or coastal areas, as the front beam is constantly bombarded by road debris, moisture, and salt. Protecting the exterior of the beam now will prevent the structural rot that claimed your original factory unit.
Tip 3: Replace Your Seals and Hardware Simultaneously
Installing a new beam is the perfect time to replace your torsion arm seals and the four large mounting bolts that secure the beam to the frame head. Old, cracked seals allow water to enter the beam, which will quickly ruin your new bearings and contaminate your grease. Additionally, always use a torque wrench when securing the beam to the chassis; these bolts are critical fasteners. Once the installation is complete, a professional four-wheel alignment is mandatory to ensure your caster and toe-in settings are correct, as even a perfectly straight new beam requires fine-tuning to track straight down the highway.
