PRO TIPS
1. Mastering the Static Timing
When installing the 009 distributor from the Ripper Jr. kit, remember that these units behave differently than stock vacuum-advance distributors. I always recommend setting your static timing at 7.5 to 10 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) as a baseline. However, the real "sweet spot" for a 009 is found at the maximum advance. Use a timing light to ensure that your total advance does not exceed 28 to 32 degrees at 3,000 RPM. If you set it too high, you risk engine-killing detonation; too low, and you''ll suffer from the infamous "009 flat spot" during acceleration. Always double-check your timing after the first 100 miles, as the points rub block will "bed in" and slightly alter your gap.
2. The Importance of the 3.0 Ohm Coil
One of the most common mistakes I see in the shop is mixing performance coils with incorrect resistance. The 3.0-ohm coil included in this kit is specifically matched for a points-style ignition. Because it has a built-in internal resistor, you MUST NOT use an external ballast resistor. Using an external resistor in conjunction with this coil will result in a weak spark and poor engine performance. Conversely, using a lower resistance coil (like a 1.5-ohm unit) without a resistor will cause your points to burn out prematurely due to excessive current. This kit is perfectly balanced, so keep the wiring simple and direct from the ignition switch to the positive terminal of the coil.
3. Maintenance of the Points and Condenser
To get the longest life out of your Ripper Jr. kit, don''t forget the "old school" maintenance. Before installation, apply a tiny, matchhead-sized dab of high-temperature distributor cam grease to the distributor cam lobes. This prevents the plastic rubbing block on the points from wearing down prematurely, which would close your point gap and retard your timing. Additionally, ensure the distributor base is properly grounded to the engine block. A poor ground is the number one cause of condenser failure. If you ever notice the engine skipping or "coughing" under load, check your point gap immediately; it should be set to exactly .016 inches (0.4mm) for optimal dwell and spark intensity.
