OVERVIEW
The EMPI 009 Cast Steel Distributor is arguably the most iconic ignition upgrade in the history of the air-cooled Volkswagen. Designed to provide a reliable, consistent mechanical advance curve, this heavyweight cast steel unit is a massive step up from the lightweight aluminum replicas often found on the market. By utilizing a cast steel housing, this distributor offers superior thermal stability and vibration resistance, ensuring that your timing remains rock-solid even under the high-heat conditions of a hard-working flat-four engine. The classic black painted finish isn''t just for durability; it provides a perfect aesthetic match for the included Retro Brown Bakelite distributor cap, giving your engine bay that timeless, period-correct performance look that VW enthusiasts crave.
Whether you are building a high-performance street engine, a rugged off-road dune buggy, or simply looking to simplify your stock Beetle''s ignition system, the 009 is the industry standard. Unlike vacuum-advance distributors that rely on carburetor vacuum signalswhich can be inconsistent with aftermarket dual-carb setupsthe 009 uses centrifugal weights to advance timing based strictly on engine RPM. This unit comes complete and ready to install, pre-loaded with high-quality points and a condenser. It is designed to fit all Type 1 based engines, offering a straightforward installation process that eliminates the clutter of vacuum lines and provides a cleaner, more efficient ignition solution for your vintage Volkswagen.
FITMENT
This distributor is designed for 12-Volt Volkswagen Type 1 based air-cooled engines. While it is a "universal" performance fit for most upright VW engines, it is most commonly installed on the following models:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1950 through 1977 (Standard and Super Beetle)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974
- Volkswagen Bus / Transporter: 1950 through 1971 (Type 1 Engine styles)
- Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): 1973 through 1974
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1961 through 1973
- Custom Applications: Ideal for Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, Trikes, and Baja Bugs using VW cases.

PRO TIPS
1. Eliminating the "009 Flat Spot"
It is a well-known trait in the VW community that switching from a vacuum-advance distributor to a 009 can sometimes cause a "flat spot" or hesitation during initial acceleration. This happens because the 009 advances based on RPM, not engine load. To fix this, you should ensure your carburetor''s accelerator pump is adjusted to provide a slightly longer, more immediate squirt of fuel. Additionally, increasing the size of your idle jet by one or two steps (for example, from a 55 to a 60 on a 34-PICT-3 carb) often smooths out the transition and makes the 009 perform flawlessly across the entire power band.
2. Timing for Total Advance, Not Just Idle
When setting the timing on a mechanical advance distributor like this one, don''t just set it at idle and walk away. While 7.5 to 10 degrees BTDC is a standard starting point for static timing, the most important measurement is your "Total Advance." Use a timing light to check the engine at roughly 3,000 to 3,500 RPM (where the weights are fully extended). You generally want to see a total advance of 28 to 32 degrees. This ensures you are getting maximum power at cruising speeds without causing dangerous engine "pinging" or detonation that can damage your pistons.
3. Don''t Forget the Felt Pad Lubrication
Maintenance is key to making a points-style distributor last for decades. Every time you change your oil, pull off the distributor rotor and look at the small felt pad located in the center of the distributor shaft. Add two or three drops of light engine oil to this pad. This oil migrates down the shaft to lubricate the advance mechanism weights and pivots. Without this simple step, the mechanical advance can become "sticky," leading to inconsistent timing, poor fuel economy, and erratic idling. Keeping that felt pad moist ensures the internal weights move freely and accurately.
