OVERVIEW
If you have spent any amount of time troubleshooting a stumbling engine or cleaning out clogged carburetor jets on your vintage Volkswagen, you know that the fuel system is only as good as the tank feeding it. Over decades of service, original Type 2 gas tanks become breeding grounds for rust, scale, and varnish. This sediment eventually finds its way past your filters and into your needle valves, leading to poor performance or even a dangerous lean-running condition. The EMPI Gas Tank Kit for the 1968-1972 Type 2 Bus is the definitive solution for owners looking to restore the reliability and safety of their fuel system. This is not just a replacement part; it is an investment in the longevity of your air-cooled engine, ensuring that every drop of fuel reaching your intake is as clean as possible.
This comprehensive kit is engineered specifically for the "Early Bay" Window era, addressing the unique venting and fitment requirements of the 1968 through 1972 model years. Unlike generic replacement options, this kit includes the critical components needed to do the job right the first time, including a new fuel level sending unit, the fuel tank outlet pipe, and a vented gas cap. Replacing a Bus fuel tank is a significant undertaking that often requires pulling the engine to access the firewall and fuel compartment; therefore, it makes zero sense to reinstall old, questionable components. By installing this complete EMPI kit, you are guaranteed a factory-spec fit that aligns perfectly with your original mounting points and filler neck, providing peace of mind for thousands of miles of adventure.

PRO TIPS
1. The "While You Are In There" Rule
In most 1968-1971 Buses, the gas tank is located behind a firewall that can only be accessed by removing the engine. Since the labor to pull a VW engine is the most time-consuming part of this job, we strongly recommend replacing all of your rubber soft goods at the same time. This includes the large rubber filler neck boot, the breather hoses, and the firewall grommets. Using old, hard rubber with a brand-new metal tank is a recipe for future fuel vapor leaks. Don''t skip the small stuffreplace every inch of fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump while the engine is out of the way.
2. Prep the Sending Unit Seal
When installing the included fuel level sending unit into the new tank, be extremely careful with the rubber seal and the locking ring. A common mistake is "dry-fitting" the seal, which can cause it to bunch up or tear as you rotate the locking ring into place. Apply a very thin smear of fuel-resistant grease or a bit of dish soap to the seal. This allows the locking ring to glide over the sender unit without snagging the rubber, ensuring a vapor-tight seal that won''t leak when you fill the tank to the brim.
3. Flush Before Final Installation
Even though this is a brand-new tank, manufacturing processes can sometimes leave behind microscopic traces of metal shavings or dust inside the vessel. Before you bolt the tank into the chassis and hook up your fuel lines, we recommend pouring a small amount of clean gasoline or denatured alcohol into the tank, sloshing it around, and draining it through the outlet. This "pre-flush" ensures that the very first gallon of gas your engine sees is 100% free of debris, protecting your new sending unit and your carburetor from immediate contamination.
