OVERVIEW
A rusted or contaminated fuel tank is the silent killer of air-cooled performance, often leading to mysterious stalling, clogged jets, and poor throttle response that can leave you stranded on the side of the road. This EMPI replacement gas tank for the 1968-1977 Volkswagen Beetle and 1968-1974 Karmann Ghia is the ultimate solution for enthusiasts looking to restore fuel system integrity without the headache of "tank cream" kits or messy chemical etching. Manufactured to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, this tank provides a clean, debris-free reservoir for your fuel, ensuring that your carburetor receives only the purest gasoline. Whether you are finishing a ground-up restoration or simply tired of cleaning your fuel filter every weekend, this high-quality steel tank offers the durability and exact fitment that Appletree Auto customers expect for their classic VW''s.
This specific model is designed for the external-fill era of the Type 1 and Type 14, featuring the correct neck location for the fuel door found on later-model air-cooled vehicles. It is crucial to note that while this fits the standard Beetle through 1977, it is not compatible with the 1302 or 1303 Super Beetle models, which utilized a completely different front suspension and tank geometry. Each tank comes finished in a protective black coating to prevent flash rust during shipping and storage, serving as a perfect canvas for your final paint or undercoating. By upgrading to a brand-new unit, you eliminate decades of sediment, moisture-trapping rust scale, and old-fuel varnish that can ruin a high-performance engine build in a matter of miles. Don''t let a fifty-year-old tank compromise your reliability when a factory-fresh replacement is just a few clicks away.

PRO TIPS
1. Flush Before Installation
Even though this is a brand-new tank, manufacturing processes can sometimes leave behind tiny traces of metal shavings, welding splatter, or protective oils inside the reservoir. Before you bolt the tank into your VW, we highly recommend rinsing the interior with a small amount of clean gasoline or a specialized fuel tank prep solvent. Slosh it around thoroughly and drain it through the outlet to ensure that no factory residue makes its way into your fuel lines or clogs your brand-new fuel filter. It is much easier to clean the tank on your workbench than it is to pull your carburetor apart three times in a row because of microscopic debris.
2. Replace Your Soft Goods and Sending Unit
When you have the fuel tank out of the car, it is the absolute best time to refresh the components that you normally cannot reach. We strongly advise installing a new fuel sending unit and a high-quality rubber sending unit seal to prevent leaks and ensure your gas gauge reads accurately. Additionally, check the condition of your filler neck hose (the large rubber boot connecting the tank to the fender) and the small charcoal canister vent lines. If these rubber parts are original, they are likely cracked and dry-rotted, which can lead to a persistent "gas smell" inside the cabin or trunk area. Using new hardware and seals ensures a vapor-tight system.
3. Proper Sealing and Anti-Vibration
To prevent metal-on-metal contact and potential rust points, ensure that your fuel tank foam seal or rubber packing is in good condition before dropping the tank into the body cavity. This seal not only prevents water from entering the trunk area but also acts as a cushion to reduce vibration and noise. When tightening the four hold-down plates, do not over-torque them; they only need to be snug enough to prevent the tank from shifting. If you are painting the tank to match your car, make sure to use a fuel-resistant paint, as occasional drips during fill-ups can easily bubble and peel standard hardware store spray paint.
