PRO TIPS
1. Prioritize Weld Penetration and Surface Prep
Before you spark up the welder, ensure that the radius edge of the FAB-3062 and the 3-inch tubing are completely free of mill scale, rust, or oils. Use a flap disc or a wire wheel to get the steel to a bright, shiny finish. Because this tab is 3/16-inch thick, it acts as a significant heat sink. I recommend a slight chamfer on the bottom edges of the tab to allow for deeper weld penetration into the root of the joint. If you are using a MIG welder, ensure your voltage is high enough to "wet out" the puddle into both the tab and the tube to avoid "cold lap" welds that can fail under the extreme vibration of off-road driving.
2. Use a Double-Shear Setup for Critical Components
In the air-cooled VW world, we often see builders try to mount heavy shocks using a single tab in "single shear." For any load-bearing application like a shock mount or a suspension pivot, you should always use two of these FAB-3062 tabs spaced apart to create a "double-shear" mounting point. This captures the bolt on both sides, effectively doubling the strength of the mount and preventing the bolt from bending or the tab from tearing. Use a spacer or the actual component you are mounting to set the distance between the tabs before tack welding to ensure a perfect fit.
3. Account for Material Cooling and Draw
When welding these tabs onto your chassis, the heat will cause the metal to expand and contract, which can "draw" or tilt the tab out of alignment. To keep your 1/2-inch holes perfectly aligned across multiple tabs, slide a long 1/2-inch bolt or a piece of 1/2-inch cold-rolled round bar through the holes of your tab pair before you finish-weld. This acts as a jig to keep everything square. Only weld in short increments, alternating sides to distribute the heat evenly, and let the assembly cool naturally. Never quench a structural weld with water, as this can embrittle the steel and lead to catastrophic failure on the trail.
