OVERVIEW
When you are performing a body-off restoration or simply trying to eliminate those annoying rattles and vibrations that plague aging air-cooled classics, the quality of your mounting hardware is paramount. This 17mm Lower Rubber Body Mount Pad is a critical component in the isolation system between your Volkswagen''s chassis and the main body shell. Over decades of service, original factory rubber pads become compressed, brittle, and eventually disintegrate, leading to metal-on-metal contact. This not only increases cabin noise but can also lead to stress fractures in the body mounting channels and the floor pan. Our high-density rubber pads are designed to provide the exact cushioning required to restore the factory-specified ride quality and structural alignment of your Beetle, Ghia, or Thing.
The 17mm thickness of this specific pad makes it the "problem solver" of the body mounting kit. While many locations along the chassis rail utilize a thinner 10mm pad, the rear mounting pointsparticularly those located in the rear wheel well areaoften require this thicker 17mm version to bridge the natural gap between the body and the frame horns. Using the correct thickness ensures that the body sits level and that the mounting bolts can be properly torqued without distorting the sheet metal. Whether you are building a concours-level restoration or a rugged off-road Baja Bug, these pads are essential for maintaining the structural integrity and longevity of your air-cooled investment. These are sold individually, allowing you to customize your mounting setup based on the specific clearances of your individual vehicle.
FITMENT
This 17mm rubber body mount pad is designed for a wide range of Type 1 based vehicles. Please verify your specific mounting requirements, as many vehicles use a combination of 10mm and 17mm pads.

PRO TIPS
1. The Gap-Test Method for Perfect Alignment
No two VW bodies sit exactly the same on a chassis after fifty years of use. When you are lowering the body back onto the pan, we recommend having both 10mm and 17mm pads on hand. Start by placing 10mm pads at all mounting locations. If you notice a visible gap at the rear mounting points before tightening the bolts, swap those specific locations out for these 17mm pads. This prevents "pulling" the sheet metal down into a void, which often causes the body to tweak or the doors to misalign. Proper spacing is the secret to doors that click shut perfectly.
2. Always Replace Hardware and Inspect the Channels
Never reuse old, rusted body bolts when installing new rubber pads. The threads are often stretched or corroded, which can lead to inaccurate torque readings or snapped bolts. We highly recommend using new Grade 8.8 or higher M10 bolts with large fender washers. Before placing the new 17mm pad, inspect the body mounting channel for rust or debris. A clean, flat surface is required for the rubber to seat correctly and provide the maximum vibration dampening effect. If the channel is pitted, treat it with a rust inhibitor before assembly.
3. Don''t Over-Torque Immediately
Rubber needs time to "settle" under the weight of the body. When installing these 17mm pads, tighten the body bolts until they are snug, but don''t perform the final torque immediately. Let the car sit on its wheels for 24 hours, or even take a short low-speed drive around the block if the car is operational, to allow the body to settle into the pads. After the settling period, go back and perform your final torque sequence. This ensures that the pads are compressed evenly and won''t loosen up after your first real drive, maintaining the quietest cabin possible.
