PRO TIPS
1. Proper Orientation is Everything
The most common mistake made during installation is putting the plate in upside down or backwards. For the baffle to work effectively, the louvers (the raised fins) must face downward into the engine case. Furthermore, the direction of the fins matters; they should be oriented so that the oil being slung by the internal components hits the "blind" side of the louver rather than being funneled upward. If you install this plate incorrectly, it can actually act as a ramp, directing oil straight into your breather system and causing the very mess you are trying to avoid.
2. The Gasket Sandwich Technique
To ensure a leak-free seal at the base of your stand, you must use two gaskets. The correct assembly order is: Engine Case, Gasket, Oil Deflector Plate, Gasket, and finally the Alternator/Generator Stand. Many builders try to save a few cents by only using one gasket, but this almost always results in a stubborn oil weep. Use a high-quality paper gasket set and, if necessary, a very thin smear of non-hardening sealant to ensure that the vacuum and pressure pulses within the case stay exactly where they belong.
3. Inspect for Flatness Before Install
Before you drop the plate onto the case studs, place it on a flat surface (like a piece of glass or a machinist''s plate) to ensure it hasn''t been tweaked during shipping or storage. Because these are thin stamped metal, any slight bend can prevent the generator stand from seating perfectly flat. If the plate is slightly bowed, you can gently flatten it with a small hammer and a flat block. A flat deflector plate ensures that the clamping force of the stand nut is distributed evenly across the entire footprint, preventing air leaks that can mess with your idle or crankcase pressure regulation.
