1. Master the Art of Shim Adjustment
The tension of your V-belt on an air-cooled VW is not adjusted by moving the alternator, but by changing the number of shims between the two pulley halves. When installing this billet pulley, always start with a full set of 10 shims. Any shims not used between the halves to set the tension MUST be placed on the outside of the outer pulley half, under the nut. Never leave shims off the assembly entirely, as they act as a spacer for the pulley nut. If the belt is too loose, move a shim from the middle to the outside. If it''s too tight, move a shim from the outside to the middle.
2. Ensure Perfect Belt Alignment
Before firing up your engine, use a straight edge to check the alignment between your crank pulley and the new billet alternator pulley. If the alternator is sitting too far forward or backward in the stand, the belt will run at an angle, leading to rapid wear of the steel inner half and potential belt failure. You can adjust the position of the alternator by loosening the strap and sliding the unit within the alternator stand. A perfectly aligned belt ensures that the billet aluminum outer half stays looking pristine and vibration-free.
3. Don''t Over-Torque the Pulley Nut
While the inner half is made of steel, the outer half is billet aluminum. When tightening the large 21mm or 22mm pulley nut, use a pulley holding tool rather than jamming a screwdriver into the cooling fan vanes, which can bend them and cause an engine vibration. Tighten the nut firmly, but avoid using an impact wrench on the highest setting. Over-torquing can lead to stripping the threads on the alternator shaft or crushing the woodruff key. Re-check the nut tightness and belt tension after the first 50 miles of driving to account for the belt "settling" into the new pulley grooves.
