OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring a vintage Volkswagen, the details matter, especially when you''re dealing with the iconic 25hp and 36hp powerplants. These early air-cooled engines are the foundation of the VW legacy, and maintaining their structural integrity requires components that adhere strictly to original factory specifications. This stock replacement steel push rod tube is engineered specifically for those early engines, providing a protective conduit for your push rods while ensuring that oil returns efficiently from the cylinder heads back to the crankcase. Over decades of use, original tubes often suffer from corrosion, road debris damage, or accidental crushing during previous maintenance. Installing a fresh set of these tubes is a fundamental step in any top-end refresh or full engine overhaul, ensuring your vintage Beetle or Bus remains leak-free and reliable on the road.
Crafted from durable, high-grade steel, this push rod tube offers the exact dimensions and profile required for a perfect seat between the engine case and the cylinder head. Unlike later 40hp or 1600cc tubes, these are specifically tailored for the narrower profile and unique requirements of the 25hp and 36hp air-cooled configurations. Because these engines rely heavily on the push rod tubes to act as an oil return path, any compromise in the tube''s shape can lead to persistent oil leaks or interference with push rod movement. Whether you''re building a period-correct Split Window Beetle or a vintage Transporter, these EMPI-sourced tubes provide the peace of mind that comes with using a part designed to meet the rigorous demands of the air-cooled enthusiast. Please note that these are sold individually, so you will need to order eight to complete a full engine build.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Surface Preparation is Critical
Before installing your new push rod tubes, take the time to thoroughly inspect and clean the seating surfaces on both the engine case and the cylinder heads. Use a fine Scotch-Brite pad or a soft brass brush to remove any old gasket material, carbon buildup, or corrosion from the bores. If the seating surface is pitted or uneven, it won''t matter how new the tube isit will likely leak. Ensuring a smooth, clean mating surface is the best way to guarantee a long-lasting, bone-dry seal on your vintage 36hp engine.
Tip 2: Check for Proper Alignment During Assembly
When you are sliding the cylinder heads onto the studs, ensure that all eight push rod tubes are perfectly aligned with their respective bores in the case and the head. It is very easy to accidentally "pinch" or "crush" the end of a steel tube if the head isn''t seated squarely. I always recommend lightly lubricating the rubber seals with a bit of clean engine oil or a specialized assembly lube. This allows the seals to slide into position without bunching up
