EMPI Weber IDF Main Jet - Size 125
Precision Performance for Your Weber IDF
The Weber IDF main jet is a critical component for fine-tuning the fuel-to-air ratio in your carburetor, specifically affecting the high-speed circuit and wide-open throttle performance. This 125 size jet is manufactured by EMPI (Part #73401.125) to meet exacting standards, ensuring consistent fuel flow and optimal engine performance for your aircooled VW.
VW Fitment and Compatibility
This main jet is specifically designed for use in Weber IDF series carburetors and is also fully compatible with EMPI HPMX carburetors. These are most commonly found on performance-oriented aircooled Volkswagen engines, including:
- VW Beetle (Bug)
- VW Karmann Ghia
- VW Bus (Type 2)
- VW Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback)
- Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Manx-style kits
Pro Tech Tips for Carburetor Tuning
1. The Venturi Rule of Thumb: When selecting your main jet, a common starting point is to multiply your venturi (choke) size by 4. For example, if you are running 30mm or 32mm venturis, a 125 main jet is often the ideal baseline for a standard 1600cc to 1776cc engine. Always start slightly rich and tune down to prevent engine overheating from a lean condition.
2. Altitude and Jetting: Remember that as your altitude increases, the air becomes thinner. If you are driving your VW in high-altitude environments, you may need to drop down to a smaller main jet size to prevent the engine from running too rich. Conversely, if you are at sea level with cold, dense air, a 125 jet provides the extra fuel needed to maintain the correct stoichiometric ratio.
3. Avoid Tool Damage: Main jets are made of soft brass and can be easily damaged. Always use a high-quality, wide-blade flathead screwdriver that fits the slot perfectly. A marred or burred jet can cause turbulence in the fuel flow, leading to inconsistent tuning results across your dual carb setup. If the jet doesn't seat smoothly, check the threads in the jet stack before forcing it.
