OVERVIEW
Restore the warmth and functionality of your classic air-cooled interior with this premium replacement Heater Cable, specifically engineered for the 1973 and 1974 Volkswagen Beetle and Super Beetle. In the world of vintage Volkswagens, the heating system is legendary for its simplicity, yet it relies entirely on the mechanical integrity of these slender steel cables to operate the heater box flappers. Over decades of service, original cables are prone to binding, fraying, or snapping entirely due to moisture ingress and lack of lubrication within the guide tubes. This high-quality IAP replacement ensures that when you pull that lever between the seats, your heater boxes respond instantly, allowing you to direct engine heat into the cabin for those chilly morning drives or to clear a foggy windshield.
Crafted to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, this heater cable (Part Number 133-711-717ME) features the precise length and tensile strength required for the mid-seventies Beetle chassis. Unlike universal "cut-to-fit" cables that often slip or bind, this unit is designed for a direct drop-in fit, saving you hours of frustration under the dash and behind the rear wheels. Whether you are performing a full frame-off restoration or simply trying to make your daily driver more comfortable for the winter season, replacing your old, stiff cables is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the tactile feel of your VW''s controls. Don''t settle for a cabin that stays cold just because of a snapped wire; upgrade to a fresh cable and enjoy the full potential of your Volkswagen''s air-cooled heating system.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Thoroughly Clean and Lubricate the Guide Tubes
Before sliding your new heater cable into the chassis, it is absolutely vital to clear out any old grease, rust, or debris from the internal guide tubes. Use a pressurized lubricant or a small amount of brake cleaner followed by compressed air to ensure the path is clear. When installing the new cable, coat the entire length of the wire with a high-quality white lithium grease or a silicone-based lubricant. This not only makes the lever action feel buttery smooth but also creates a moisture barrier that prevents the new cable from rusting and seizing in the future.
Tip 2: Check the Heater Box Lever Return Springs
A common mistake during installation is blaming the cable for a heater that won''t turn off, when the real culprit is a weak or missing return spring on the heater box itself. While you have the cable disconnected, manually move the lever on your heater boxes (located near the engine/exhaust) to ensure they move freely and snap back to the closed position. If the lever is stiff, soak it with penetrating oil. If the spring is broken, replace it at the same time as the cable to ensure the system functions exactly as the factory intended.
Tip 3: Avoid Over-Tightening at the Pinch Bolt
When securing the cable to the heater box lever, ensure the cockpit lever is in the fully "down" or "off" position and the heater box flapper is completely closed. Tighten the pinch bolt or barrel nut just enough to secure the wire without crushing or kinking it. If you over-tighten and deform the wire, it creates a weak point that is likely to snap under tension. After tightening, cycle the lever several times to ensure the flapper opens fully and, more importantly, closes completely to prevent unwanted heat soak during the summer months.
