OVERVIEW
Maintaining the integrity of your front wheel bearings is paramount to both the safety and performance of your classic air-cooled Volkswagen. This premium front inner wheel seal is specifically engineered for Ball Joint front ends equipped with disc brakes, ensuring that high-temperature wheel bearing grease remains trapped inside the hub while effectively locking out road grime, moisture, and abrasive debris. Over years of service, the original seals are subjected to intense heat cycles and environmental exposure, which eventually causes the rubber to harden, crack, and fail. Once a seal is compromised, grease can migrate out of the hub and onto your brake rotors and pads, leading to a dangerous loss of stopping power and premature bearing wear. Installing this high-quality replacement seal is the most cost-effective insurance policy you can buy to prevent a total bearing seize or a brake system failure during your next cruise.
When you are performing a front-end rebuild or a routine brake service, you should never compromise by reusing old or questionable seals. This replacement seal, designed to meet the strict 311-405-641B OEM specifications, features a precision-molded rubber lip bonded to a sturdy steel reinforcement ring. This design ensures a tight, press-fit seat within the rotor hub that won''t shift or distort under the stresses of cornering. The inner sealing lip is engineered to maintain a constant, low-friction contact with the spindle shoulder, providing a superior barrier against the elements. Whether you are maintaining a bone-stock 1967 Beetle or a 1974 Karmann Ghia with a performance disc brake conversion, this seal provides the professional-grade fit and finish that Appletree Auto customers expect for their restoration projects.

PRO TIPS
1. Use a Proper Seal Driver for Installation
To ensure a leak-free seal, it is critical that the seal is driven into the rotor hub perfectly square. Never use a hammer directly on the face of the seal, as this can distort the metal casing or tear the rubber lip. Instead, use a dedicated seal driver tool or a large-diameter socket that matches the outside edge of the seal frame. Gently tap the seal in until it is flush with the hub surface. If the seal is cocked even slightly, it will not provide an airtight barrier, and you will likely see grease seepage within a few hundred miles of driving.
2. Pre-Lubricate the Inner Sealing Lip
One of the most common causes of immediate seal failure is "dry start" friction. Before sliding your rotor back onto the spindle, apply a very light film of clean wheel bearing grease to the inner rubber lip of the seal and the mating surface on the spindle shoulder. This lubrication allows the seal to glide over the spindle during installation without catching or flipping the lip backward. It also provides the necessary lubrication for the first few rotations of the wheel before the grease inside the hub naturally migrates to the contact point.
3. Inspect the Spindle Sealing Surface
A brand-new seal cannot do its job if it is trying to seal against a damaged surface. Before installation, take a moment to closely inspect the shoulder of the spindle where the seal lip will ride. If you see deep grooves, pits, or rust, the new seal will fail prematurely. For minor imperfections, you can use a very fine emery cloth (400 to 600 grit) to polish the spindle surface to a smooth finish. If the groove is deep enough to catch a fingernail, you may need to install a "Speedi-Sleeve" or consider replacing the spindle entirely to ensure your wheel bearings stay protected and lubricated.
