OVERVIEW
When it comes to the safety and drivability of your classic air-cooled VW, few components are as critical as the front wheel bearings. This Premium Ball Joint Inner Bearing is engineered specifically for the 1.138-inch spindle found on later model Beetles, Ghias, and Type 3s. Over decades of service, original bearings suffer from intense heat cycles, moisture intrusion, and grease breakdown, which inevitably leads to "pitting" or "brinelling" on the bearing races. This degradation causes noticeable vibration, uneven tire wear, and a "wandering" sensation when driving at highway speeds. By upgrading to this premium-grade inner bearing, you are ensuring that your front-end geometry remains stable and your rotation remains friction-free, providing that signature smooth ride that a well-maintained Volkswagen is known for.
This isn''t just any off-the-shelf replacement; it is a high-tolerance component designed to meet or exceed original equipment manufacturer specifications. The premium construction features high-carbon hardened steel rollers and a precision-ground cage that allows for optimal grease distribution throughout the bearing assembly. In the world of air-cooled restoration, the inner bearing carries the brunt of the load from the spindle, making it the first line of defense against front-end failure. Whether you are building a rugged daily driver, a weekend cruiser, or a concours-level restoration, installing new premium bearings is a non-negotiable step in maintaining the integrity of your 1969 and newer ball joint front end. Don''t risk damaging your expensive spindles or compromising your safety on aged, noisy bearings when a professional-grade solution is readily available.

PRO TIPS
1. The "Palm Method" for Grease Packing
Never install a wheel bearing "dry" or with just a superficial coating of grease. To properly pack this bearing, place a large dollop of high-quality wheel bearing grease in the palm of your hand. Take the wider end of the bearing and repeatedly "slap" or press it into the grease until you see the grease being forced out through the top of the rollers and the cage. This ensures that the internal cavity is fully lubricated. If you don''t see grease coming out the other side, the bearing is not fully packed and will likely fail prematurely due to heat friction.
2. Proper Race Installation is Mandatory
When replacing the bearing, you MUST also replace the bearing race inside the drum or rotor. Never mix a new bearing with an old race. When driving the new race into the hub, use a dedicated brass drift or a bearing race driver tool. Avoid using a standard steel screwdriver, as it can easily slip and create a burr or scratch on the polished surface of the race. Even a microscopic scratch will cause a "hot spot" that leads to rapid bearing failure. Ensure the race is seated completely flush against the shoulder of the hub to prevent it from shifting while driving.
3. The Thrust Washer Pre-load Secret
Setting the tension on your front wheel bearings is a "feel" process. After tightening the spindle nut while spinning the wheel to seat the bearing, back it off slightly. The industry-standard "VW Method" is to tighten the nut only until the thrust washer located behind it can still be moved back and forth with the tip of a flat-head screwdriver using only firm finger pressure. The washer should move, but it should not be "loose" or "sloppy." If the washer is locked solid, the bearing is too tight and will overheat. If the washer moves too freely, the bearing is too loose and will cause steering wobble.
