OVERVIEW
When it comes to the front-end stability and safety of your classic air-cooled Volkswagen, the outer wheel bearing is a small component that carries a massive responsibility. This EMPI Ball Joint Outer Wheel Bearing is engineered to meet or exceed original equipment standards, providing the smooth, frictionless rotation necessary for a comfortable ride and precise steering response. Over time, heat, moisture, and road debris can break down the grease inside your hub, leading to pitted rollers and scarred races that manifest as a rhythmic humming or a distressing vibration in the steering wheel. Replacing your bearings with these high-quality tapered roller units ensures that your spindle remains protected and your wheels stay true, whether you are cruising the local strip or pushing through a long-distance road trip. As a master specialist, I cannot stress enough that your front suspension is only as reliable as the bearings it spins on; don''t let a seized bearing turn a weekend drive into an expensive spindle repair.
This specific outer bearing is designed for the ball joint front ends that defined the later era of the Beetle and Karmann Ghia, offering a significant upgrade in durability over the earlier link pin designs. It is perfectly suited for both stock drum brake setups and modern disc brake conversions, making it a versatile staple for any VW enthusiast''s garage. Precision-machined from high-carbon steel, the tapered rollers are designed to handle both radial and axial loads, which is crucial when navigating tight corners or dealing with the lateral forces of spirited driving. When you install this EMPI bearing, you are investing in a component that has been a trusted choice in the VW community for decades. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that "good enough" isn''t in the vocabulary of a true restorer, which is why we provide components that maintain the mechanical integrity of your vintage machine while standing up to the demands of modern roads.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Bearing Packing is Non-Negotiable
Never install a "dry" bearing or simply smear grease on the outside of the rollers. To ensure longevity, you must "pack" the bearing by forcing high-quality wheel bearing grease into the cage until it oozes out of the top. You can use a mechanical bearing packer tool or the traditional palm-of-the-hand method. If you don''t see grease coming through the gaps between the rollers and the inner race, the bearing will experience metal-on-metal contact within the first few miles, leading to premature failure and potentially welding the bearing to your spindle.
2. Always Replace the Race with the Bearing
It is a common mistake to swap the bearing while leaving the old race (the outer cup) inside the drum or rotor. Bearings and races develop a wear pattern together; installing a new EMPI bearing onto an old, worn race will significantly shorten the lifespan of the new part. Use a brass drift or a dedicated race driver set to carefully tap out the old race and seat the new one. Ensure the new race is fully bottomed out in the hub; if it is not seated perfectly square, your wheel will have a wobble that no amount of nut adjustment can fix.
3. The "Thrust Washer" Adjustment Method
Setting the preload on VW front wheel bearings is a matter of feel rather than high torque. After tightening the spindle nut to seat the bearing, back it off slightly. The goal is to have the nut just tight enough so that the thrust washer behind it can still be moved back and forth with the tip of a flathead screwdriver using firm finger pressure, but without the screwdriver needing to be "pried" against the hub. If the washer is locked solid, it''s too tight and the bearing will overheat. If the washer moves too freely, the wheel will have excessive play, leading to "brake knock-back" and poor handling.
