1. Bench Bleeding is Mandatory: Before you ever bolt this master cylinder into your pedal assembly, you must bench bleed it. Use a bench bleeding kit to cycle fluid through the cylinder until no bubbles are visible. 2. Choosing the Right Adapter: This master cylinder uses a 1/8-inch NPT outlet, but most VW brake lines are either 10mm metric or 3/16-inch SAE flare. Do not attempt to force a flare fitting directly into the NPT port. You must use a 1/8-inch NPT to Metric (or SAE) adapter fitting. Use a small amount of Teflon tape or thread sealant on the NPT side only, ensuring that no sealant enters the hydraulic fluid path, to prevent leaks at the junction point.
3. Bore Size Logic: Remember that a smaller bore (like this 5/8-inch unit) creates higher pressure at the brake calipers but requires a longer pedal stroke. If you are running large multi-piston rear calipers, this 5/8-inch bore will give you incredible clamping force with very little leg strength required. However, if you find the pedal travels too far toward the floor before the brakes grab, you might need to move up to a 3/4-inch bore. For most standard VW rear disc or drum setups on lightweight buggies, the 5/8-inch bore is the preferred choice for maximum control.
