When upgrading from rear drums to rear disc brakes, you are significantly increasing the volume of fluid required to move the caliper pistons. To avoid a "spongy" or low brake pedal, we highly recommend upgrading to a larger bore master cylinder, such as a 20.6mm unit. This ensures you have the necessary hydraulic displacement to actuate both the front and rear calipers effectively. Always remember to bench-bleed your new master cylinder before installation to remove all trapped air from the system.
2. Verify Your Axle Length
This kit is specifically designed for "Long Spline" axles, which were standard on 1968 and later Volkswagens. If you are working on a custom project or a "transition year" vehicle, it is vital to measure your axle splines before ordering. If your axle is too short, the rotor will not seat properly, leading to catastrophic failure of the splines or the axle nut. Also, because this kit adds an inch of width to each side, double-check your fender clearance, especially if you are running wide off-road tires or a lowered suspension setup.
3. Proper Torque and Bedding-In
The large 36mm rear axle nut requires a massive amount of torquetypically around 217 ft-lbs or more depending on your specific manual. Never rely on an impact wrench alone; use a high-quality torque wrench and a "cheater bar" if necessary to ensure the rotor is fully seated. Once installed, perform a proper "bedding-in" procedure by making several controlled stops from 35 mph down to 5 mph. This transfers a thin layer of friction material from the pads to the rotors, preventing glazing and ensuring the longest possible lifespan for your new braking system.
