Ring Compressor Tool, 85.5mm
* High-quality aluminum construction.
* Designed for easier and faster piston ring assembly.
* Fits Type 1 VW air-cooled engines.
OVERVIEW
Precision engine building requires the right tools to ensure longevity and performance, and the AA Pistons 85.5mm Ring Compressor Tool is a non-negotiable addition to any air-cooled VW enthusiast''s toolbox. Specifically engineered for the standard 1600cc bore, this tapered aluminum compressor eliminates the frustration and risk associated with universal, band-style compressors that often catch or snag piston rings during installation. When you are sliding a fresh set of pistons into your cylinders, the last thing you want is a broken ring or a scratched cylinder wall. This tool provides a perfectly smooth, tapered transition that gently compresses the rings into their grooves as the piston moves into the bore, ensuring a seamless and damage-free assembly every single time.
Crafted from high-grade, lightweight aluminum, this tool is designed to withstand the rigors of a professional engine shop while remaining accessible for the weekend warrior. The 85.5mm sizing is the gold standard for stock displacement Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 engines, making it one of the most utilized tools in the VW community. By using a dedicated size-specific compressor like the RC8550T1, you significantly reduce the "fudge factor" involved in engine assembly. Whether you are performing a stock rebuild on a daily driver or prepping a high-performance street engine, this AA Pistons tool ensures that your ring gaps stay perfectly aligned and your oil scrapers remain intact, providing the tight seal and compression your air-cooled flat-four demands.

PRO TIPS
1. Lubrication is Key to a Smooth Install
Before attempting to slide the piston through the compressor, always apply a generous amount of clean engine oil or assembly lube to both the inner walls of the compressor and the piston rings themselves. A "dry" installation can lead to the rings binding against the aluminum surface, which might cause the rings to twist or even snap. By ensuring a slick surface, the rings will glide effortlessly into the taper, compressing evenly without any mechanical stress. Don''t forget to also lightly coat the cylinder wall where the piston will eventually reside to ensure the entire transition is friction-free.
2. Verify Ring Gap Orientation
One of the most common mistakes during engine assembly is allowing the piston ring gaps to align, which creates a "path of least resistance" for combustion gases to blow by into the crankcase. Before placing the 85.5mm compressor over the piston, double-check that your ring gaps are staggered according to your engine builder''s manual (typically 120 degrees apart). Once the compressor is on, it is much harder to verify these positions. Use the compressor to hold the rings in their corrected positions as you tap the piston into the cylinder using the wooden handle of a hammer or a dedicated piston driver.
3. Maintain the Tapered Edge
To ensure your AA Pistons Ring Compressor lasts for dozens of engine builds, you must protect the bottom edge of the tool. Any nicks, burrs, or dents on the bottom surface can prevent the tool from sitting flush against the cylinder deck, which may allow a ring to "pop out" between the compressor and the cylinder. Always store the tool in a clean, padded toolbox drawer and wipe it down after every use. If you ever feel a burr on the edge, very lightly dress it with a fine-grit emery cloth to keep the mating surface perfectly flat and smooth against the cylinder head of the engine block.
