OVERVIEW
Transform the aesthetic and performance of your classic Volkswagen with the legendary Sprintstar Wheels in a stunning all-chrome finish. Originally designed as a high-performance alternative to stock steel wheels during the height of the 1960s and 70s air-cooled era, the Sprintstar has remained a staple for enthusiasts seeking that iconic "Cal-Look" or "Vintage Speed" appearance. These wheels feature the classic five-spoke design that perfectly complements the rounded curves of a Beetle or the boxy utility of an early Bus. This complete set of four wheels is meticulously crafted to offer a brilliant, mirror-like chrome shine that won''t just turn heads at the local car show, but will provide a durable, long-lasting finish that stands up to the rigors of the road. By choosing the 5-on-205mm "Wide 5" bolt pattern, you are staying true to the vintage roots of your early VW while upgrading to a wheel that is significantly lighter than factory steelies, weighing in at just 14.45 lbs each.
Precision engineering is at the heart of these 15-inch by 5-inch wide wheels. The 5-inch width is the "sweet spot" for many air-cooled applications, allowing for a wider variety of tire choices without the clearance headaches often associated with wider 6-inch or 7-inch rims. With a 3-3/4 inch backspacing, these wheels are designed to sit perfectly within the wheel wells of most stock-fendered Volkswagens, providing a slightly more aggressive stance than factory wheels while maintaining proper steering geometry and suspension travel. Each wheel in this set comes complete with a stylish center cap and high-quality valve stems, ensuring you have the core components needed for a professional installation. Whether you are finishing a ground-up restoration of a 1950s Oval Window or adding some flash to a Manx-style dune buggy, these chrome Sprintstars deliver the perfect blend of nostalgic styling and modern manufacturing consistency.

PRO TIPS
1. Critical Lug Seat Compatibility
One of the most common mistakes I see in the shop is using factory VW lug bolts with aftermarket wheels. Original Volkswagen steel wheels utilize a "Ball Seat" lug, which has a rounded base. These Sprintstar wheels are designed with a 60-degree Tapered (Cone) Seat. If you attempt to use your stock ball-seat bolts, they will not seat properly against the wheel face, leading to vibration, damaged wheel mounting holes, and potentially the wheel coming loose while driving. Always verify you are using the correct 12mm x 1.5 tapered lugs (Part # 00-9537-0 for bolts or 00-9516-0 for nuts) to ensure a safe and secure fitment. Additionally, always hand-torque your chrome wheels to factory specifications (usually around 80 lb-ft) rather than using an impact wrench to avoid marring the chrome finish around the lug holes.
2. Optimizing Tire Size and Fender Clearance
While the 15x5 size is very versatile, tire selection is key to achieving the look you want without rubbing. For a classic "nose-down" Cal-Look stance on a Beetle, many builders prefer a 135R15 or 145R15 "narrow" tire on the front and a 165R15 or 195/65R15 on the rear. Because these wheels have a 3-3/4 inch backspacing, they push the outer edge of the wheel slightly further toward the fender lip than a stock 4-inch wide wheel. If your car is significantly lowered with a narrowed beam, these 5-inch wheels provide excellent clearance. However, if you are running a stock-width beam and a heavy drop, be sure to check your tire-to-fender clearance during full-lock turns to avoid catching the fender edge.
3. Maintaining the Chrome Brilliant Finish
Chrome wheels require specific care to prevent pitting and oxidation, especially in coastal areas or regions where road salt is used. I always recommend applying a high-quality synthetic wheel sealant or wax immediately after unboxing and before mounting tires. This creates a sacrificial barrier against brake dust and moisture. Never use acidic "all-wheel" cleaners on chrome; these can cause cloudy spots or peeling over time. Instead, use a mild soap and water solution and a soft microfiber wash mitt. If you do notice small specs of surface rust or "pitting," use a dedicated chrome polish and a soft cloth to lift the oxidation before it penetrates the plating. Keeping them clean and dry is the secret to making that show-quality shine last for decades.
