PRO TIPS
1. Proper Heim Joint Selection and Spacing
When installing these spindles, it is critical to use high-quality chromoly Heim joints (rod ends). Because the inside widths of the mounting points are specific (1.829" top and 1.875" bottom), you will likely need precision stainless steel high-alignment spacers to ensure the Heim joint sits centered and has the necessary range of motion. Never "force" a fit by over-tightening the mounting bolts, as this can stress the spindle ears. Always use Grade 8 or higher hardware for the suspension mounting points to match the strength of the spindles themselves.
2. Torque and Safety Wire for Caliper Bolts
Since these spindles utilize a 3/8"-24 threaded hole for the brake caliper mounts, you must ensure that your caliper bolts are torqued to the manufacturer''s specific requirements. Because off-road vehicles are subject to intense vibration, Appletree Auto recommends using a high-strength thread-locking compound or, ideally, safety-wiring the caliper bolts if your calipers are drilled for it. This prevents the bolts from backing out during high-speed runs through the "whoops" or over corrugated washboard terrain.
3. Regular Inspection for Stress and Wear
Even though these spindles are built for abuse, the nature of long-travel off-roading puts immense leverage on the snout and mounting ears. We recommend a "pre-flight" inspection before every trip. Look for any signs of hairline cracks in the powder coat or paint around the weld joints, which can indicate metal fatigue. Additionally, ensure the 2-inch hollow snout is kept clean and properly greased when installing your hubs and bearings. If you operate in saltwater or high-alkali environments like dry lake beds, rinse the spindles thoroughly after use to prevent corrosion in the rod end bores.
