OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing your air-cooled beast to the limits on the dunes or through punishing rocky trails, your suspension system takes a massive amount of abuse. One of the most common causes of catastrophic failure in off-road VWs is suspension over-extension, also known as "topping out." These 26-inch double-woven limiting straps are engineered to be the ultimate insurance policy for your drivetrain and suspension components. By catching the suspension at the precise moment before it over-travels, these straps protect your shocks from internal damage and prevent your CV joints from reaching extreme angles that lead to binding, heat build-up, and eventual breakage. In the world of high-performance off-roading, a small investment in a pair of robust limiting straps can save you thousands of dollars in repairs and hours of frustrating downtime on the trail.
Unlike standard single-layer straps that can stretch excessively or fray under the weight of heavy-duty rear ends and high-travel setups, these EMPI double-woven straps are specifically built for extreme applications and heavy vehicles. The double-thickness construction provides twice the tensile strength of standard straps, ensuring that even the heaviest Baja Bug or high-horsepower Sand Rail stays within its mechanical operating window. The heavy-duty steel end tabs are heat-treated and designed to withstand the violent snapping forces associated with full suspension droop during a jump or high-speed whoop section. When you install these, you aren''t just adding a part; you''re adding peace of mind that your suspension geometry will remain intact and your expensive shocks will remain protected through every obstacle you encounter.
FITMENT
These 26-inch limiting straps are a universal high-performance component, but they are most commonly utilized on the following air-cooled Volkswagen and off-road applications:
- VW Baja Bugs: All years and models with long-travel suspension.
- Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: Custom tube chassis and rail configurations.
- Meyers Manx: Fiberglass buggies with modified off-road stances.
- VW Type 1 Beetle: Custom off-road builds and "Class 11" style racers.
- VW Type 181 Thing: For increased ground clearance and travel protection.
- Custom Rail Applications: Ideal for rear trailing arm setups with 10+ inches of travel.
- Front Beam Applications: Suitable for long-travel front ends requiring 26-inch reach.

PRO TIPS
1. Account for Strap Stretch During Installation
One of the most common mistakes I see in the shop is mounting limiting straps at the exact length of the suspension''s maximum reach. You must remember that all nylon straps will stretch approximately one inch for every twelve inches of strap length under the weight of the suspension. For a 26-inch strap, you should expect nearly two inches of stretch over time. When mounting these, ensure they are positioned so that they become tight at least 1 to 2 inches before your shock absorber reaches full extension or your CV joints begin to bind. This "pre-stop" ensures that when the strap stretches under load, it still stops the suspension before any damage occurs to your more expensive components.
2. Use Grade 8 Hardware and Proper Spacing
The force exerted on a limiting strap during a "full-droop" event is massive. Never use standard hardware store bolts to mount these straps. I always recommend using Grade 8 bolts with nyloc nuts to ensure they never vibrate loose. Additionally, make sure the strap has a clear path of travel. If the strap rubs against a frame rail, a shock body, or a tire, it will eventually chafe and snap. Use spacers or "clevis" style mounts if necessary to kick the strap away from the chassis to ensure a straight, unobstructed pull when the suspension drops.
3. Regular Inspection for UV and Heat Damage
While these double-woven straps are incredibly tough, they are made of synthetic fibers that can be affected by the environment. If your Baja or Rail sits in the sun constantly, or if the straps are mounted too close to a high-heat exhaust header, the nylon fibers can become brittle over time. During your pre-ride inspection, always check for fraying, "fuzzing" of the material, or discoloration. If you see any signs of a cut or significant wear on the edges of the webbing, replace them immediately. It is much cheaper to replace a pair of straps every few seasons than it is to replace a snapped shock shaft or a blown-out CV joint in the middle of the desert.
