OVERVIEW
Precision steering is the backbone of a safe and enjoyable air-cooled driving experience, and this EMPI Right Outer Tie Rod End is engineered to restore the factory-tight handling your classic Volkswagen deserves. Over decades of service, the original steering linkage components on 1968 and later Beetles and Ghias often succumb to grease contamination, road salt, and simple mechanical fatigue. When the internal ball socket develops play, you will notice a "vague" feeling in the steering wheel, uneven front tire wear, and the dreaded front-end "shimmy" at highway speeds. This high-quality replacement component is designed to eliminate that slop, ensuring that every input from the steering wheel translates directly to the spindle without hesitation or vibration. Whether you are performing a complete front-end overhaul or just replacing a torn boot and worn joint, this tie rod end provides the structural integrity and smooth articulation required for modern driving conditions.
Constructed from high-strength forged steel and featuring a durable, weather-resistant rubber dust boot, this EMPI unit is built to meet or exceed original equipment specifications. The right-hand thread design is specifically intended for the outer position on the passenger side (right side) of the vehicle, though it is always wise to inspect your entire linkage assembly during installation. Because steering components are critical safety items, EMPI utilizes rigorous manufacturing standards to ensure the ball stud remains seated even under extreme lateral loads. Installing a fresh set of tie rod ends is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve the "road feel" of your Type 1 or Type 14, providing a crisp, predictable response that makes mountain curves and city streets equally manageable. Don''t compromise on safety with aged, clicking, or loose steering joints when a robust, factory-spec solution is readily available to keep your VW tracking straight and true.

PRO TIPS
1. The "Count the Turns" Alignment Hack
When removing your old tie rod end, always loosen the jam nut first, then count exactly how many full 360-degree rotations it takes to unscrew the old joint from the tie rod. When you install the new EMPI unit, thread it in by the exact same number of turns. While this is not a substitute for a professional laser alignment, it will get your "toe-in" setting close enough to safely drive the car to an alignment shop without scrubbing the rubber off your tires in the first five miles. Consistency is key here; don''t move the jam nut more than necessary during the process.
2. Inspect the Steering Dampener and Inner Ends
If your outer tie rod end is worn out, there is a very high probability that the steering dampener (the horizontal shock absorber on the linkage) and the inner tie rod ends are also reaching the end of their lifespan. While you have the front end jacked up and the tools out, check the dampener for leaks or "dead spots" in its travel. Replacing the dampener alongside your new tie rod ends will significantly reduce steering wheel vibration and protect your new joints from premature wear caused by road kickback. Check the inner ends for any vertical play by squeezing them with a pair of large channel locks; if they compress, replace them too.
3. Proper Taper Seating and Torque
The tie rod end uses a tapered fit to lock into the spindle. Before installation, ensure the hole in the spindle is clean and free of old grease or burrs. Never use an impact wrench to tighten the castle nut initially, as this can spin the ball stud inside the housing and damage the internal seat. Tighten the castle nut to the factory specification (usually around 25-30 ft-lbs), and then tighten it just a tiny bit further only to align the hole in the stud with the notches in the castle nut for the cotter pin. Never back off a nut to align the cotter pin hole; always tighten forward to the next window to maintain proper tension.
