PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP

1. Use a Lubricant for Tight Clearances

When you are trying to pull a thick wiring bundle or a stiff hose through the center of a new rubber grommet, friction can make the job incredibly frustrating and can sometimes even pop the grommet out of the panel. We recommend applying a small amount of silicone spray or a drop of dish soap to the inside of the grommet before passing your lines through. This allows the wires to slide easily without tearing the rubber or dislodging the grommet from the firewall. Avoid using petroleum-based greases, as they can degrade the rubber over time; stick to silicone or water-based lubricants for the best results.

2. Prep and Deburr Your Holes Perfectly

Before installing the grommet, it is vital to ensure the hole you have drilled in your panel is clean and smooth. Even though the grommet is designed to protect the wires, a jagged metal edge or a "burr" left behind by a drill bit can cut into the rubber grommet itself during installation or under heavy vibration. Use a deburring tool or a small round file to smooth the edges of the 11/16-inch hole on both sides of the panel. This ensures the grommet seats perfectly in the groove and prevents the metal from slicing through the rubber barrier over years of use.

3. Account for Wire Loom Thickness

Always remember to measure your wiring with the protective loom or heat shrink already installed before choosing your grommet size. If you are using a corrugated split loom, the outer diameter will be significantly larger than the wires alone. If the fit is too tight, it may distort the grommet and cause it to lose its seal against the panel.
