PRO TIPS

1. Prepare for Maximum Penetration

Because these tabs are a beefy 1/4-inch thick, it is absolutely critical to prep your welding surface correctly. Before welding, use a flap disc or wire wheel to remove any mill scale from the tab and the chassis tubing. If you are using a lower-voltage MIG welder, you might consider a slight bevel on the edge of the tab where it meets the pipe. This ensures the weld nugget penetrates deep into the core of the 1/4-inch steel rather than just sitting on the surface, preventing "cold lap" which can lead to catastrophic failure on the trail.

2. Use a Dummy Bolt for Alignment

When you are welding a pair of these tabs to act as a mounting clevis (for a shock or a limit strap), never trust your eyes alone. Always use a "dummy bolt" and a spacer or the actual component you are mounting to keep the tabs perfectly parallel during the welding process. The heat from the welding arc will naturally want to pull the metal inward. By bolting the tabs together with a spacer in between, you ensure that once the metal cools, your 1/2-inch bolt will still slide through both holes effortlessly without needing to be hammered in.

3. Manage Your Heat Cycles

When welding 1/4-inch thick steel to thinner wall chassis tubing (like .095 or .120 wall DOM), focus your arc primarily on the thicker tab and "wash" the puddle onto the thinner tubing. This prevents blowing a hole through your frame while still getting the tab hot enough for a structural bond. If you are welding multiple tabs in a row, stagger your welds to prevent localized heat buildup, which can warp the tubing or crystallize the steel, making it brittle and prone to cracking under the harsh vibrations of off-road use.
