OVERVIEW
When you are deep in the weeds of a custom air-cooled build, whether it is a rugged Baja Bug, a lightweight sand rail, or a high-performance street machine, the difference between a professional finish and a backyard hack job often comes down to the quality of your fabrication components. The A&A Manufacturing 3-inch Long Channel Tab (FAB-3204) is the ultimate solution for builders who demand structural integrity and versatility. Unlike standard flat tabs that can flex or fatigue under the intense vibrations of a high-revving flat-four engine or the punishing terrain of a desert wash, this channel tab features a recessed design that provides significantly more rigidity. At Appletree Automotive, we know that every weld counts, and these tabs are designed to provide a clean, professional mounting point for everything from brake line stays and wiring looms to body panels and fuel line routing. We have seen these used in countless award-winning builds because they offer the perfect balance of surface area for a strong weld and a low-profile aesthetic that does not clutter your chassis.
The "long" 3-inch profile of this specific tab makes it a favorite among off-road fabricators who need to bridge gaps or provide clearance between the mounting surface and the component being secured. Manufactured from high-quality cold-rolled steel, these tabs are weld-ready and engineered to withstand the elements. The 1/4-inch pre-drilled hole is perfectly sized for standard hardware, allowing you to quickly bolt on accessories without the headache of centering and drilling your own holes in thick plate steel. Whether you are bracing a custom roll cage or simply trying to tidy up the engine bay of your Type 1, these channel tabs offer a level of precision that makes fabrication faster and more reliable. Do not settle for flimsy, universal brackets when you can use the same components trusted by professional chassis builders across the globe. When you choose A&A Manufacturing parts from Appletree, you are investing in the longevity and safety of your Volkswagen project.
FITMENT
This is a universal fabrication component commonly used on the following air-cooled VW applications and custom chassis projects:
- VW Beetle (Type 1): Ideal for Baja Bug conversions, fender supports, and custom interior mounting.
- VW Bus (Type 2): Used for securing auxiliary battery trays, fuel lines, and custom cabinetry in campers.
- VW Karmann Ghia: Perfect for hidden wire tucks and custom engine bay detailing.
- VW Thing (Type 181): Excellent for mounting exterior accessories and reinforcing soft-top frames.
- Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: The industry standard for mounting body skins, skid plates, and electronics to tube frames.
- Meyer''s Manx & Fiberglass Buggies: Used to create secure mounting points on the metal sub-frame for body bolts.
- General Off-Road: Compatible with any 4130 chromoly or mild steel tube chassis fabrication.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Weld Preparation is Paramount
Before you strike an arc, ensure that the mounting surface on your chassis and the base of the channel tab are completely free of mill scale, oil, or rust. Even though these tabs are high-quality steel, a quick pass with a flap disc or sandpaper will ensure deep penetration and a weld that will not fail when the chassis starts to flex. If you are welding to a painted or powder-coated frame, you must grind back the coating at least an inch away from the weld zone to prevent contamination and toxic fumes. Remember to "tack" the tab in place first to check your alignment before laying down the final bead, as the heat can cause the tab to pull or warp slightly if not secured.
2. Optimize for Vibration Resistance
In the world of air-cooled Volkswagens, vibration is the enemy of every fastener. When using these tabs to mount hard components like fuel pumps or ignition coils, we highly recommend using a rubber grommet or a small "well nut" inside the 1/4-inch hole. This isolates the component from the high-frequency vibrations of the engine and the impact of the road. If you are using the tab for brake lines, use an Adel clamp (cushioned P-clamp) bolted through the tab. This prevents the metal brake line from rubbing against the steel tab, which could lead to a dangerous leak over time. Always use blue Loctite on the bolts passing through these tabs to ensure they stay put through the rough stuff.
3. Strategic Placement for Maintenance
When planning your tab placement, always think three steps ahead to the maintenance phase. Position the 3-inch long tab so that the bolt head or nut is easily accessible with a standard wrench or socket. Avoid placing tabs in "blind" spots where you cannot get a backup wrench on the nut. Since these are 3 inches long, they provide excellent leverage for "stand-off" mounting, which is great for keeping heat-sensitive wires away from hot cylinder heads or exhaust headers. If you are building a Baja Bug, try to orient the tabs so they do not catch debris or mud, which can lead to localized corrosion if the car is not washed thoroughly after a run in the dirt.
