OVERVIEW
Restoration enthusiasts and air-cooled purists know that the small details make the biggest difference in a build, and there is nothing quite like the functionality and classic aesthetic of vintage pop-out windows. These seals are specifically engineered to restore the weather-tight integrity of your 1965 through 1977 Volkswagen Beetle''s rear quarter windows. Over decades of exposure to harsh UV rays, extreme temperature fluctuations, and moisture, original rubber seals inevitably become brittle, crack, and lose their elasticity. This degradation leads to annoying wind whistles at highway speeds and, more dangerously, water intrusion that can quickly ruin a custom headliner, rot out your interior panels, or lead to hidden rust in the floor pans. By replacing your aged, dry-rotted seals with these high-quality reproductions, you are ensuring that your cabin remains dry and quiet, preserving both the value and the structural longevity of your air-cooled investment.
Manufactured to meet or exceed original equipment standards, these EMPI pop-out window seals offer a precise profile that matches the complex contours of the Type 1 Sedan body and window frame perfectly. The high-grade rubber compound used in these seals is engineered for modern longevity, providing superior resistance to ozone and environmental pollutants compared to the rubber technology of the 1960s. Whether you are performing a full body-off concourse restoration or just refreshing a reliable daily driver, these seals provide that satisfying, snug closure that only fresh, pliable rubber can offer. Because these seals are sold individually and feature a non-directional design, they are compatible with either the driver or passenger side of the vehicle. We always recommend replacing them in pairs to ensure a uniform look and a symmetrical seal across the entire rear section of your Bug.

PRO TIPS
1. Prepare the Surface for a Perfect Bond
Before you attempt to install your new seals, it is absolutely critical to remove every trace of the old, degraded rubber and any adhesive residue left behind. Use a plastic scraper and a mild adhesive remover to clean the metal channel on the window frame and the body flange. Any leftover debris will create high spots that prevent the new rubber from seating evenly, which is the leading cause of leaks in brand-new seals. Once clean, wipe the area down with rubbing alcohol to ensure a completely grease-free surface. Taking an extra twenty minutes on prep work will save you hours of frustration trying to track down a leak later.
2. Use the Right Lubricant for Installation
Getting a fresh, tight-fitting seal to seat into the frame can be a struggle, but you must avoid using petroleum-based products like WD-40 or grease. Petroleum will cause the rubber to swell and eventually rot, shortening the life of the seal significantly. Instead, use a mixture of mild dish soap and water in a spray bottle, or a dedicated silicone-based rubber lubricant. This provides the necessary slip to get the seal tucked into the corners correctly without damaging the material. Once the soap dries, it actually acts as a mild adhesive to help keep the seal in place during the window''s operation.
3. Allow for a "Settling" Period
New rubber is much firmer than the old, flattened seals you are replacing. After installation, you may find that the pop-out window latch requires a bit more force to close than it did before. Do not over-tighten the latch hardware immediately, as this can put excessive stress on the glass or the hinge pivots. Close the window and leave it latched for 48 to 72 hours in the sun if possible. The heat and constant pressure will allow the new rubber to "take a set" and conform to the unique shape of your Beetle''s body. After this settling period, the windows will open and close with that perfect factory "thud" and provide a superior airtight seal.
