OVERVIEW
When you are cruising in your classic Beetle, there is nothing that ruins the experience quite like the incessant rattling of door glass against a metal frame. Over decades of service, the original felt channels in your vent wing posts succumb to the elements, becoming brittle, compressed, or simply disintegrating into dust. This EMPI Vent Wing Post Felt Channel is the professional restoration solution designed to restore that factory-quiet cabin and smooth window operation you have been missing. By providing a plush, low-friction surface for the leading edge of your door glass, this channel ensures that your window stays firmly in place while gliding effortlessly up and down, preventing unsightly scratches on your glass and significantly reducing wind noise during high-speed highway travel. It is a vital component for anyone looking to maintain the structural integrity and aesthetic value of their vintage Volkswagen interior.
Precision is everything when it comes to air-cooled VW weatherstripping, and this felt channel is manufactured to meet the exacting standards required for a perfect fit in 1965 through 1976 Beetles. Whether you are performing a full body-off restoration or simply performing much-needed maintenance on your daily driver, replacing these channels is a small investment that yields massive results in tactile feel and cabin comfort. This specific unit is designed to seat perfectly into the vertical vent wing division bar, utilizing high-quality materials that resist moisture absorption and UV degradation. Don''t settle for universal "fits-all" solutions that leave gaps or cause the window to bind; choose the component that was engineered for the specific geometry of the late-model Type 1 door assembly. Sold individually, this felt channel is the key to a tight, professional seal that protects your interior from the elements while keeping your glass safe and secure.

PRO TIPS
1. Preparation of the Division Bar is Critical
Before you attempt to slide the new felt channel into place, you must ensure the inside of the metal division bar is completely free of debris, old adhesive, and oxidized rubber. Use a small flat-head screwdriver or a specialized dental pick to scrape out the remnants of the old channel. I highly recommend spraying a bit of brake cleaner on a rag and wiping the internal track clean. If the metal channel is pinched or bent from years of use, gently pry it back to its original width using a wide-blade putty knife to ensure the new felt doesn''t bind during installation.
2. Use Proper Lubrication for a Smooth Slide
Installing a dry felt channel into a tight metal track can be a recipe for frustration and potential tearing. To make the process effortless, apply a light mist of silicone spray or a small amount of soapy water to the backside (the non-felt side) of the channel. This acts as a temporary lubricant that allows the felt to seat deeply into the corners of the division bar without bunching up. Avoid using petroleum-based greases, as these can attract dirt and eventually degrade the felt material over time, leading to premature failure.
3. Secure the Top with a Dab of Adhesive
One of the most common issues with vent wing felts is "creep," where the felt slowly slides down the channel over months of rolling the window up and down. To prevent this, apply a very small "pea-sized" drop of black weatherstrip adhesive at the very top of the metal division bar before sliding the felt into its final position. Once the felt is seated, the adhesive will lock the top in place, ensuring that the channel remains perfectly aligned with the top of the door frame for years to come. Just be careful not to get any adhesive on the face of the felt where the glass needs to slide!
