OVERVIEW
Transform your air-cooled powerplant into a high-performance machine with the EMPI Megadual Racing Style Exhaust System. Engineered for the enthusiast who demands both a show-stopping aesthetic and a significant bump in horsepower, this system is crafted from premium stainless steel to ensure longevity and a mirror-like finish that resists the harsh elements of the road. Unlike standard mild steel exhausts that succumb to corrosion over time, this stainless steel masterpiece provides a durable solution that keeps your engine bay looking pristine while delivering the deep, aggressive exhaust note that defined an era of Volkswagen performance. The 1 1/2-inch tubing is precision-bent to optimize exhaust scavenging, allowing your 1200cc to 1600cc engine to breathe more freely and reach its full potential on the street or the strip.
The Megadual design is famous for its distinct dual-exit profile, giving your Beetle or Dune Buggy a balanced, symmetrical look that screams vintage racing. This system is designed with the installer in mind, featuring high-quality slip-joints that allow for a degree of adjustability often missing in rigid, one-piece systems. By eliminating the bulky factory heater boxes, you not only reduce weight but also clear up space for high-performance carburetor setups. Whether you are running a single stock carb or a set of dual Webers, this exhaust provides the clearance and flow necessary for serious tuning. It''s the ultimate upgrade for the VW owner who isn''t afraid to trade heat for horsepower and a legendary racing pedigree.
FITMENT
This exhaust system is designed for Type 1 upright air-cooled engines (1200cc-1600cc) and fits the following models:
- Volkswagen Beetle (Standard & Super): 1954-1977 (Sedan & Convertible)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956-1974
- Dune Buggies / Sand Rails: All years using Type 1 upright engine configurations
- VW Thing (Type 181): 1973-1974
Note: This system eliminates factory heater boxes. It is compatible with most single or dual carburetor setups but will NOT fit engines equipped with 48s, 51s, or EPC 34 carburetors due to clearance requirements.

PRO TIPS
1. Use Anti-Seize on All Connections
When assembling your stainless steel Megadual system, always apply a high-temperature anti-seize lubricant to the slip-joints and header flange bolts. Stainless steel is prone to "galling," where the metal surfaces can essentially cold-weld themselves together under heat and pressure. Using anti-seize ensures that you can make fine adjustments during the initial fitment and, more importantly, allows you to disassemble the system in the future without damaging the tubing or snapping studs.
2. Re-Jet Your Carburetors After Installation
Installing a high-flow racing exhaust like the Megadual significantly changes the volumetric efficiency of your engine. Because this system scavenges exhaust gases much more effectively than a stock pea-shooter or restrictive muffler, your engine will likely run leaner than it did before. To prevent overheating and to maximize the performance gains, we highly recommend checking your spark plugs and potentially stepping up your main jet sizes to compensate for the increased airflow. A well-tuned carb paired with this exhaust is where the real horsepower is found.
3. Maintain the Mirror Finish
While stainless steel is highly resistant to rust, the heat cycles of an air-cooled engine will eventually cause the metal to "blue" or turn a golden straw color near the exhaust ports. This is a natural characteristic of the metal. To keep the rest of the system looking its best, wipe down the entire exhaust with denatured alcohol or a high-quality degreaser before the very first time you start the engine. Any fingerprints or oil residue left on the pipes will "bake" into the finish permanently once they get hot. Regular polishing with a dedicated stainless steel metal polish will keep that show-quality shine for years to come.
