OVERVIEW
When you''re ready to elevate your air-cooled engine to the legendary 2180cc displacement, this 92mm x 82mm Piston and Cylinder Kit with Forged Pistons is the gold standard for high-performance builds. Designed for the serious enthusiast, this kit provides the perfect foundation for a high-torque, high-horsepower stroker engine that can withstand the rigors of aggressive street driving, off-road racing, or drag strip launches. The forged aluminum pistons offer superior structural integrity and thermal expansion characteristics compared to standard cast pistons, allowing for tighter tolerances and better heat dissipation under extreme combustion pressures. Whether you''re building a weekend cruiser or a dedicated sand rail, this kit delivers the reliability and "oomph" that only a true stroker motor can provide.
Engineering a 2180cc engine requires precision, and these Mahle-style forged pistons are specifically designed for an 82mm stroke, featuring a relocated wrist pin height to ensure the piston doesn''t travel too far out of the cylinder at top dead center. The cylinders are cast from high-quality iron to ensure maximum cooling surface area and structural rigidity, preventing "warping" or "egging" under high-heat conditions. This kit is a comprehensive solution, including the pistons, cylinders, high-tension piston rings, wrist pins, and circlips. Because this is a "big bore" kit, it is important to remember that your engine case and cylinder heads must be machined to accept the larger outer diameter of these barrels, making this a centerpiece of a professional-grade engine overhaul.
FITMENT
This kit is designed for Volkswagen Type 1 based engines that have been modified for stroker applications. It is not a "drop-in" replacement for stock engines and requires specific machining and supporting components:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1954-1977 (Requires machining for 92mm bore and 82mm stroke).
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956-1974 (Requires machining and stroker crank).
- Volkswagen Bus / Transporter: 1954-1971 (Type 1 Engine configurations only).
- Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): 1973-1974.
- Custom Applications: Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Trikes utilizing a Type 1 upright engine case.
- Crankshaft Compatibility: Specifically engineered for use with an 82mm stroker crankshaft.

PRO TIPS
1. Precision Machining and Clearancing
Building a 2180cc engine isn''t just about bolting parts together; it''s about clearance. Because you are using an 82mm stroker crank with these 92mm pistons, you must "clearance" the interior of the engine case. This involves grinding away small amounts of aluminum from the main webbing and the bottom of the cylinder spigots to ensure the connecting rods and crank counterweights don''t make contact. Always do a "dry fit" of the crank, rods, and pistons without rings first to verify there is at least 0.060 inches of clearance throughout the entire rotation. Don''t rush this step, as a single point of contact will ruin your brand-new build within seconds of startup.
2. Proper Ring Gapping for Forged Pistons
Forged pistons expand more than cast pistons when they reach operating temperature. Consequently, setting the correct piston ring end gap is critical to prevent the rings from "butting" together, which can break the ring lands or score the cylinder walls. For a high-performance street build, we generally recommend a top ring gap of .004 inches per inch of bore diameter. For this 92mm (3.622 inch) bore, that equates to roughly .014 to .016 inches. Always check the gap for every single ring in the specific cylinder it will be installed in, and use a dedicated ring squaring tool or a piston to push the ring down about an inch into the barrel before measuring.
3. Heat Management and Break-In
The 92mm cylinder is known as a "thin wall" barrel compared to the 90.5mm or 94mm thick-wall variants, which means heat management is your top priority. Ensure your cooling tin is complete, your thermostat is functioning, and you are using a high-quality external oil cooler if possible. During the initial break-in, use a high-zinc (ZDDP) break-in oil to protect the cam and lifters, and avoid idling the engine for long periods. You want to vary the RPM and load to help the rings seat against the iron cylinders. It''s also a smart move to re-torque your cylinder heads after the first 500 miles, as the heat cycles can cause the gaskets and studs to settle, potentially leading to a head leak if not checked.
