OVERVIEW
When you''re building a precision air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the smallest components often play the most critical roles in ensuring longevity and preventing catastrophic failure. The 10mm cylinder head washer is a perfect example of a part that is frequently overlooked but absolutely essential for maintaining the structural integrity of your top end. Unlike standard hardware store washers, these specialized 10mm washers are engineered to withstand the extreme clamping forces required to seal the cylinder heads to the barrels. Because air-cooled engines undergo significant thermal expansion and contraction during every heat cycle, the load distribution provided by these hardened washers prevents the head nuts from digging into the soft aluminum of the cylinder head. By providing a flat, stable surface for the head nut to bear against, these washers ensure that your torque readings are accurate and that the clamping pressure remains uniform across the entire sealing surface.
At Appletree Auto, we understand that a high-performance or even a stock daily-driver VW engine is only as strong as its weakest link. That is why we offer these EMPI 10mm cylinder head washers as individual units, allowing you to get exactly the number you need for your specific buildwhether you are replacing a single lost piece or performing a full-scale engine overhaul. These washers are manufactured to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, featuring a hardened construction that resists "cupping" or deforming under the high-torque loads of a 10mm stud. When you are assembling your 1300, 1500, or 1600cc engine, using fresh, high-quality hardware is the only way to guarantee a leak-free seal and prevent the dreaded head-leakage that can result from uneven stud tension. Don''t settle for old, pitted, or distorted hardware when the reliability of your Volkswagen is on the line; invest in the proper fasteners to keep your engine running cool and strong for years to come.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Inspect for "Cupping" During Reassembly
If you are tempted to reuse your old washers, take a very close look at them first. Over decades of heat cycles and high-torque loads, original washers often become "cupped" or concave. If you reinstall a cupped washer, it will not distribute the load evenly across the cylinder head surface. This leads to inaccurate torque readings because the nut has to "flatten" the washer before it actually starts applying clamping force to the head. For the cost of a few dollars, always start your build with a fresh set of 16 hardened washers to ensure your torque wrench is giving you a true measurement of the stud tension.
2. Proper Lubrication for Accurate Torque
To get the most accurate clamping force on your cylinder heads, you must reduce friction between the nut and the washer. I always recommend applying a tiny drop of high-quality engine oil or a specialized assembly lubricant to both sides of the 10mm washer and the threads of the stud. This ensures that the torque applied to the nut is actually translating into "stretch" on the stud rather than being lost to friction. Be careful not to over-lubricate, as excess oil can migrate to the head gasket surface; a light film is all you need to ensure a smooth, professional assembly.
3. The Sequential Torque Method
When installing these washers and the accompanying nuts, never torque them to the final specification in a single pass. After ensuring all 10mm washers are seated flat against the head, follow the factory-recommended "criss-cross" or spiral torque pattern. Start at 7 ft-lbs for all nuts to seat the heads, then move to 14 ft-lbs, and finally hit your target of 23-25 ft-lbs (check your specific manual for 10mm stud specs). This incremental approach, supported by these heavy-duty washers, prevents the cylinder head from warping and ensures that the compression remains locked inside the combustion chamber where it belongs.
