OVERVIEW
Precision is the backbone of any high-performance air-cooled engine, and when you are running a dual-carburetor setup, even the smallest hardware components play a critical role in your vehicle''s drivability. The EMPI Throttle Shaft Nut is a specialized replacement part designed specifically for Weber IDF and EMPI HPMX series carburetors. Over years of heat cycles and mechanical vibrations, original hardware can become rounded, stripped, or simply lost during a teardown. This 7mm threaded nut is the crucial anchor that secures your throttle linkage arms and return spring levers to the throttle shaft. Without a secure, tight fit here, your synchronization will drift, leading to a "lazy" throttle response or, worse, an unsafe sticking throttle condition that can ruin your weekend at the track or on the trail.
At Appletree Auto, we know that searching for specific metric hardware for vintage European-style carburetors can be a nightmare at local hardware stores. Standard M7 hardware is notoriously difficult to find, yet it is the standard for the throttle shafts on the legendary 40, 44, and 48 IDF platforms. This replacement nut features the correct 11mm hex head, ensuring that your vintage-style wrenches fit perfectly without slipping. Whether you are performing a complete carburetor overhaul on a set of Italian Webers or simply refreshing the linkage on a modern HPMX kit, having a handful of these high-quality nuts in your toolbox ensures that your fuel system remains reliable and your throttle geometry stays exactly where you set it. Don''t let a two-dollar part keep your Volkswagen off the road; invest in the proper hardware designed for the rigors of the air-cooled engine bay.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Avoid Over-Torquing the Shaft
While it is tempting to crank down on the throttle shaft nut to ensure it never moves, you must remember that the throttle shaft itself is often made of a milder steel or brass alloy. Over-tightening can easily strip the fine M7 threads or, in extreme cases, twist the shaft, causing the butterfly valves to bind against the carburetor throat. Use a small 1/4-inch drive wrench and tighten until snug. If you are worried about the nut backing off due to vibration, a single drop of blue (medium strength) thread locker is much safer than excessive torque.
Tip 2: Check for Linkage Binding
After installing a new nut and securing your linkage arm, always manually operate the throttle from the carburetor side before starting the engine. Ensure the nut or the arm isn''t bottoming out against the carburetor body or the bearing housing. There should be a tiny amount of clearance to allow the shaft to rotate freely. If the nut is too tight against the arm and causes resistance, your return springs may not be able to pull the idle back down, leading to a dangerous "hanging" idle or unintended acceleration.
Tip 3: Inspect the Lock Washer
Whenever you replace the throttle shaft nut, take a close look at the tabbed lock washer or wave washer located behind it. These washers are designed to provide tension and prevent the nut from spinning loose. If the washer is flattened or the tabs are broken, the new nut will eventually vibrate loose regardless of how tight you make it. For the ultimate peace of mind during a rebuild, we recommend replacing the lock hardware at the same time you install your new EMPI 43-6413-0 nuts.
