PRO TIPS
1. Mastering the 4-Piston Bleeding Process
When installing 4-piston calipers like those found in the GAT1204-4B kit, it is vital to remember that each caliper has multiple bleed screws. To ensure there is absolutely no air trapped in the system, always start with the inner bleeder (closest to the center of the vehicle) before moving to the outer bleeder. Furthermore, always bleed the caliper furthest from the master cylinder first. Because these are high-performance billet units, even a tiny air bubble can cause a "spongy" pedal feel, which negates the advantage of the 4-piston clamping force. Use a high-quality DOT 4 or racing-grade brake fluid to handle the high temperatures generated by the Hawk Racing pads.
2. Proper Bedding-In of Hawk Racing Pads
The Hawk Racing pads included in this kit require a specific "bedding" or "burnishing" procedure to perform at their peak. Once the kit is installed, perform a series of 6 to 10 stops from approximately 35 MPH down to 5 MPH using moderate pressure. Follow this with 2 or 3 hard stops from 45 MPH down to 5 MPH. Never come to a complete stop with your foot held firmly on the brake pedal during this process, as it can cause "pad transfer" or uneven deposits on the rotor, leading to vibrations. Allow the brakes to cool completely for at least 15 to 20 minutes of driving without heavy braking to thermally set the pads to the rotors.
3. Spindle Preparation and Bearing Packing
Since this kit is designed for "Combo" spindles, it is the perfect time to inspect your spindle snouts for any burrs or heat discoloration. Before installing the new bearings, use a high-quality, high-temp synthetic wheel bearing grease. Do not just "coat" the bearings; you must "pack" them by hand or with a bearing packer tool until the grease is forced through the rollers and out the other side. This is especially critical in off-road environments where sand and silt try to work their way into the hubs. Ensuring a perfect seal and a fully packed bearing will significantly extend the life of your billet hubs and spindles under harsh racing conditions.
