        1. Prioritize a Proper Break-In Procedure

        The first 20 minutes of a new camshaft''s life are the most critical. You must use a high-quality assembly lube on the lobes and the faces of new liftersnever reuse old lifters with a new cam. Upon initial startup, immediately bring the engine to 2,0002,500 RPM and maintain that speed for at least 20 minutes. This ensures the cam lobes are properly splashed with oil and "mated" to the lifter faces. Always use an oil high in ZDDP (Zinc) or a dedicated break-in additive to prevent premature lobe wear on flat-tappet setups like the VW air-cooled engine.

        2. Verify Component Clearances

        With a high-lift cam like the W-140, "drop-in" installation is a myth. You must check for "lobe-to-rod" clearance, especially if you are running a stroker crankshaft, as the cam lobes may physically strike the connecting rods. Additionally, you must verify "valve-to-piston" clearance and ensure your valve springs do not reach "coil bind" at full lift.
