OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of your off-road machine or high-performance street VW, the weak link in your drivetrain is often the standard CV joint. These EMPI Type 2 002 to 930 CV Drive Flanges are engineered to bridge the gap between your dependable 002 (3-Rib) transmission and the massive strength of Porsche 930-style CV joints. By upgrading to a 930 CV setup, you are not just increasing torque capacity; you are significantly expanding your suspension travel potential. Standard Type 2 joints often bind at high angles, but the 930 joint is the industry standard for long-travel sand rails, heavy-duty bajas, and performance buses. These flanges are forged from high-strength Chromoly steel to ensure they can handle the brutal shock loads of off-road racing and the high-torque output of modified air-cooled engines. Don''t let a snapped flange or a binding CV joint end your weekend early when you can bolt on the reliability of Chromoly.
Precision is everything in a transaxle build, and these drive flanges deliver exactly that. Specifically designed for the 002 3-rib bus transmission, they feature a perfect spline fit to prevent premature wear and slop in the drivetrain. Unlike cheaper alternatives, these flanges come pre-tapped for 3/8-inch fine-thread CV bolts, providing a much more secure and robust fastening point than standard metric hardware. This is critical for off-roaders who experience constant vibration and extreme cycling of the suspension. Sold as a pair, these flanges allow for a symmetrical and balanced upgrade to your rear end. Whether you are building a dedicated desert racer or a high-horsepower street sleeper, these flanges provide the necessary foundation for a drivetrain that won''t quit. Remember that these require the use of specific flange plugs to keep your gear oil where it belongs, ensuring your internal components stay lubricated while you tackle the toughest terrain.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Blind Hole Preparation
Because these flanges are tapped for 3/8-inch fine-thread bolts, it is absolutely essential that you clean the threaded holes thoroughly before installation. During the manufacturing and shipping process, machining oils or debris can settle in the threads. Use a high-quality brake cleaner and compressed air to blow out each hole. When installing your 12-point CV bolts, always use a small amount of blue thread-locking compound. Since these are blind holes, ensure your bolt length is correct; a bolt that is too long will bottom out before the CV joint is fully torqued, leading to catastrophic failure of the splines and bolts during your first run. Always double-check your torque specs after the first 50 miles of operation.
2. Don''t Forget the Flange Plugs
One of the most common mistakes when swapping to 930 drive flanges on a 002 transmission is forgetting the internal flange plugs. These flanges require part number 98-5140-B (or equivalent) to seal the center section. Without these plugs, the gear oil from your transaxle will migrate out through the center of the flange and wash the specialized grease out of your 930 CV joints. This leads to both a dry, howling transmission and burnt-up CV joints. Ensure the plugs are seated firmly and check for any signs of weeping around the center of the flange during your regular maintenance intervals. A small dab of RTV on the plug outer diameter can provide extra insurance against leaks.
3. Optimizing CV Angle and Clearance
When moving to a 930 CV joint, you are likely doing so to gain more suspension travel. While the 930 joint can handle up to 25-28 degrees of angle depending on the brand, you must check for "flange bite." This occurs when the CV cage or the axle hits the edge of the drive flange at full droop. Before heading out to the dunes, cycle your suspension through its full range of motion without the springs installed. If you notice any contact between the axle shaft and the inner lip of these flanges, you may need to slightly chamfer the edge of the flange or adjust your limit straps. Maintaining a 2-degree safety margin at full droop will significantly extend the life of your boots and internal CV components.
