OVERVIEW
When you are building a high-performance sand rail, a rugged baja bug, or simply restoring a classic street machine, the connection between your hands and the road is paramount. The EMPI Steering Box and Shaft Coupler is a critical component designed to bridge the gap between your custom steering column and a standard Volkswagen worm-and-roller steering gearbox. Finished in a sleek, durable black coating, this coupler is not just about aesthetics; it is engineered to handle the rigors of both off-road abuse and daily commuting. By utilizing O.E. VW splines, it ensures a precision fit that eliminates the sloppy play often found in worn-out or inferior aftermarket steering components. You won''t have to worry about stripped teeth or loose tolerances when you are navigating tight trails or high-speed highway curves.
This heavy-duty coupler is designed to work in conjunction with a urethane or rubber steering disc (sold separately) to provide a cushioned yet firm steering response. The two-piece coupling design allows for a degree of flex, which is essential for protecting your steering gearbox from the vibrations and chassis flex inherent in air-cooled Volkswagen front ends. Whether you are installing a custom steering shaft in a tube-chassis buggy or replacing a damaged factory unit, this EMPI component provides the structural integrity required for a safe and reliable build. Don''t compromise on your steering geometry; choose a part that is backed by decades of air-cooled expertise and designed to meet the exact specifications of the original Volkswagen steering interface.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Spline Engagement and Centering
Before you tighten the pinch bolt, ensure that the coupler is fully seated onto the steering box input shaft. It is a common mistake to only partially slide the coupler on, which can lead to stripped splines under heavy torque. Always center your steering box (count the turns from lock to lock and find the middle) and align your steering wheel before final installation. This ensures that your turn signal cancelation mechanism and your steering geometry remain perfectly symmetrical. If the coupler is stubborn, a small amount of anti-seize on the splines can help, but never force it with a heavy hammer; a light tap with a rubber mallet is all it should ever need.
2. Inspect the Urethane Coupler Disc Regularly
The steering box coupler is only as strong as the disc that connects the two halves. While this EMPI steel coupler is incredibly durable, the rubber or urethane disc in between is a wear item. If you are using this on an off-road vehicle, the increased vibration and extreme steering angles can cause the disc to tear or the bolt holes to oval out over time. We recommend upgrading to a high-durometer urethane disc for off-road use to maintain a "connected" feel. During every oil change or pre-trip inspection, grab the steering shaft and check for any radial play at the coupler. If you see the disc twisting significantly before the gearbox moves, it is time for a replacement.
3. Torque and Safety Wire for Peace of Mind
Steering failure is not an option. When installing the pinch bolt on the EMPI 17-2584-B, ensure you are using the provided high-grade hardware and torque it to factory specifications (approximately 20-25 ft-lbs). Because air-cooled VWs are notorious for vibration, we highly recommend using a drop of medium-strength blue thread locker on the pinch bolt threads. For those building extreme off-road racers or long-distance tourers, you can even drill the head of the bolt for safety wire. This provides a visual indicator that the bolt hasn''t backed off and ensures that your steering linkage remains intact no matter how rough the terrain gets.
