OVERVIEW
When it comes to the safety and stopping power of your vintage Split Window Bus, there is no room for compromise. This EMPI Rear Brake Drum is engineered specifically for the 1964 through 1967 Volkswagen Type 2, providing the structural integrity and heat dissipation required for heavy-duty transporter applications. These years represent a critical period in VW history, and maintaining the original braking geometry is essential for preserving the driving characteristics of your classic Transporter. Crafted from high-grade cast iron, this drum is designed to handle the weight of a fully loaded Microbus or Panel Van while ensuring consistent pedal feel and reliable friction surfaces. Whether you are performing a concourse-level restoration or simply keeping your daily driver on the road, these drums offer the perfect balance of vintage styling and modern manufacturing tolerances.
The 5 on 205mm "Wide 5" bolt pattern is a hallmark of classic VW styling, and this drum maintains that iconic look with precision-machined 12mm threaded lug holes. A common failure point in vintage Buses is the internal spline area where the drum meets the rear axle; this EMPI replacement features reinforced splines to prevent the stripping and "rounding out" that often occurs with aged or improperly torqued units. By choosing this high-quality replacement, you are investing in the longevity of your drivetrain. The drum surface is finished to provide an ideal mating area for your brake shoes, reducing break-in time and minimizing the risk of brake chatter or uneven wear. Don''t let a warped or thin drum compromise your Bus''s stopping distanceupgrade to a fresh set of drums and experience the confidence of a firm, responsive brake pedal.

PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP
1. The Critical Torque Requirement
The single most important step when installing these rear drums is the final torque of the axle nut. You MUST tighten the rear axle nut to a minimum of 365 ft-lbs. Anything less than this specification allows for microscopic movement between the axle splines and the drum splines. Over time, this movement will "fret" the metal and eventually strip the splines completely, leaving you stranded and potentially damaging your rear axles. If you don''t have a torque wrench that goes that high, we highly recommend using a "Torque Multiplier" tool to ensure the nut is seated correctly. Always use a new cotter pin to lock the nut in place once the torque is achieved.
2. Surface Preparation is Mandatory
These drums are shipped with a thin coating of Cosmoline or protective oil to prevent rust while they are in the warehouse. Before you ever put a brake shoe against this drum, you must thoroughly clean the internal friction surface with a high-quality brake parts cleaner. If you fail to remove this oil, it will contaminate your new brake shoes, causing them to glaze over and significantly reducing your stopping power. For the best results, give the friction surface a light scuff with medium-grit sandpaper after cleaning to help the new shoes bed in more effectively during the first few miles of driving.
3. Inspect Your Splines and Seals
While you have the old drums off, take a moment to inspect the splines on your rear stub axles. If the splines on the axle show signs of "stepping" or narrowing, a new drum will not fit tightly and may fail prematurely. Additionally, this is the perfect time to replace your rear wheel bearing seals. If your old seals are leaking gear oil into the brake area, it will ruin your new drum and shoes instantly. We always recommend installing new brake shoes and a fresh hardware kit whenever you install new drums to ensure that the entire braking system wears evenly and performs at its peak potential.
