Mastering the Latest Rage Oil Relief Piston Puller Tool
Vehicle Fitment and Compatibility
The Latest Rage Oil Relief Piston Puller Tool (Part #7002) is a specialized engine tool designed specifically for the Volkswagen Type 1, 2, and 3 aircooled engine platforms. This includes the 1200cc, 1300cc, 1500cc, and 1600cc upright engines commonly found in the VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Bus, and various Dune Buggies or Sand Rails. It is compatible with both single-relief and dual-relief engine cases, providing a reliable way to extract pistons that are often stuck due to sludge or heat cycling.
Pro Tech Tips for Successful Removal
Tip 1: Clear the Path and Lubricate. Before inserting the tool, ensure the oil relief plug and spring have been completely removed. If the piston is seized or difficult to move, spray a generous amount of penetrating oil or carburetor cleaner into the relief bore. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes to break down old oil varnish and carbon deposits that may be locking the piston in place.
Tip 2: Achieve a Proper Bite. Slide the tool into the hollow center of the relief piston. Turn the expansion knob until you feel the tip firmly grip the internal walls of the piston. Ensure the tool is seated straight; pulling at an angle can cause the piston to bind further against the engine case. Once secured, use a steady, straight pulling motion to extract the piston from the bore.
Tip 3: Inspect and Prep the Bore. Once the piston is removed, never install a new one without cleaning the bore first. Use a lint-free rag and solvent to wipe the internal passage. Check the extracted piston for scoring or "shiny spots" which indicate it was sticking. If the piston does not drop in and slide out freely under its own weight after cleaning, the bore may need a light de-burring with a fine scotch-brite pad to ensure consistent oil pressure.
