Tip 1: The Art of the Plug Chop
To verify if the .190 main jet is the correct size for your specific engine build, perform a "plug chop." Drive your VW at a sustained high RPM (where the main circuit is fully active) for about 30 seconds, then safely cut the ignition and coast to a stop. Pull your spark plugs and inspect the ceramic insulator. A light tan or "coffee with cream" color indicates a perfect mixture. If the plug is white, you are still too lean; if it is sooty black, the .190 may be too large for your current venturi and air corrector combination.
Tip 2: Incremental Tuning is Key
Never jump more than two jet sizes at a time when tuning your carburetor. Air-cooled engines are extremely sensitive to fuel changes. If you are moving from a .170 to a .190, monitor your cylinder head temperatures (CHT) closely. Tip 3: Brass is Soft - Handle with Care

Always use a flat-head screwdriver that fits the slot of the jet perfectly. A screwdriver that is too small will "chew" the brass, creating burrs that can disrupt fuel flow or make future removal nearly impossible. Ensure the carburetor bowl is free of debris before installation, as even a tiny speck of dirt can clog a .190 orifice and cause a lean-out condition on that specific barrel.
